Default Scherzer to the Mets

I'm impressed that the Mets are spending some money, and there's hardly anyone I'll be more proud to have on the team than Max.

On the other hand, he's 37 and it's the Mets, so I would not at all be surprised if he gets hurt right out of the gate...

What's the saying: "If so and so retired today...or got signed by the New York Mets, would he have done enough already to make the Hall of Fame?"

$43.33 Million per year. Good God!

A five inning starter ain't worth 43 mill/season.

What would a complete game pitcher be worth today? 100 mill/season

Max has only 12 CGs in 407 starts.

He does average about 6 innings per start though, so he is above average.

I guess he needs the money.

It's definitely a high price from the team perspective. Cohen is worth >$10 billion iirc so he can afford it.

If Scherzer stays healthy and puts up anything close to his career averages (if only 6 IP/start), I'll be thrilled!

Seems like Dave Roberts had him pegged as a 4 1/3 inning pitcher, HOF credentials notwithstanding.

Scherzer's deferred payments from the Nats start next year so they will be paying him $15M a year to play for the Mets.

In 2014 the Tigers had Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello, and Robbie Ray all on the roster - and got swept by the Orioles in the playoffs. Just sayin'.

Scherzer's pitching motion was supposed to cause him arm problems that would shorten his career. This was said back when the Tigers had him. Never happened. Enjoy Mad Max; he's awesome.

God it’s good to be a baseball player with huge guaranteed contracts. If one of my sons turns out to be an amazing running back, I would certainly be proud but might have to ask if they like throwing a baseball better than running a football.

I love Max. As free agents signings go, he has been - parden the pun - MONEY.

Granted 37 at the start is high, but it only took one billionaire to get it there.

Even if I had been much, much better than I was - and even though I played long before the money got real big - I sure wish I had worked on it more...

I do miss playing...it's been at least 25 years since I last embarrassed myself trying to hold onto the game I love.

As a long suffering Mets fan, I don't get overly excited about off season acquisitions. Including this one. With Mets track record he will hurt his arm in Spring Training, fall of a curb tomorrow, or something even crazier. I am fully confident that if the Mets had drafted Babe Ruth in his prime he would have promptly stopped hitting home runs the following day.

What's the over under on the percentage of the season DeGrom will miss?

I don't know. The sheer number of different issues he reportedly experienced last year at different times is certainly pretty concerning.

For the 90 or so innings he did manage to pitch, his numbers were absolutely epic. But he sure seemed delicate.

Yep. Scherzer signed 7yr/$210M contract with the Nats, 1/2 was deferred. The Nats pay him $15M a year until 2027 and the Dodgers pay the last $15M in 2028.

It depends on what the interest rate is on the deferred payments, but in general it's in the team's favor to defer payments. He'll be paid for 2021 work in 2028 dollars, which will be worth less than they were in 2021, AND the team will have seven years to invest that money before they have to pay it to him.

People who criticize the Mets Bonilla deal and laugh their ass off about it every year on the same day.

How do you tell me you don’t know much about finance without telling me you don’t know much about finance.
