Nice looking square Colgans. They are anything but proofs. That's about all I know..

Just how common are these? I have one (marked as a proof by SGC), but I know that theory has been debunked. Could they be sales samples of some kind, or tied to a different product all together?

Without any other stamps or advertising on them I realize it makes it really difficult to determine.

Great cards!

Bill

I agree, but oddly enough they are printed on a paper stock with a weird feel to them. I wonder if anyone has ever spoken to a printer for any further info.

I have handled a lot of them and my opinion is that they are just another set. Proofs generally don't have a lot of copies as these do.
.
Here is Collins I had in my first collection,,,

I have a theory. Ask yourself why there’s nothing printed on the back? Then ask yourself why some are found with glue residue?

My theory is that these were some type of premium that were intended to be glued into an album. Probably something made by Colgan’s. Maybe it was only intended for the retailer and not public consumption…or maybe it was? Either way, I think that idea makes the most sense. No one seems to have proof that they came in retail packaging, so perhaps it was a vendor-only offering? One day, I feel an album with turn up.
