Default The Cars - underrated?

I’ll throw the album “Shake It Up” out there and you have hits but also songs like “Dream Away” and “Cruiser” that are fantastic.

I'll agree, but then I'm a bit nostalgic. They came on big during my college days. Good times.

Great topic!!
The Cars were Top-40 kings for quite a number of years, but many of their somewhat deeper cuts are really cool, too. Some of my fav's are the somber tunes 'All Mixed Up,' 'Don't Go To Pieces,' 'Double Life' and 'Since You're Gone' (which got a decent amount of airplay), plus the more upbeat 'Don't Cha Stop.'

I like The Cars. Not all their songs, but most. My sister used to get pissed at me when I would steal her copy of The Cars first album.

Some solid pop/rock hits, I would not call them a great group but very good. Bye Bye Love probably my favorite.

I’d say probably a tad over rated. Hot just when MTV was firing up and they used the video realm well. Don’t think their stuff has held up very well.

Love The Cars. Definitely underrated, especially with the majority of today's music being absolute crap. Bands these days should listen to the classics instead of creating garbage that is in no way listenable.
RIP Ric & Ben.

That I can agree with, but, at the same time, I remember when my parents and the older generation thought the same about my/our music.

I find with today's sound boxes and all sorts of other tricks to make them sound good, there certainly isn't the talent that there once was, but then again, the radio stations seem to be pushed to play this "modern" music instead of music that is played with some talent required. Thank god, for me anyways, there are still some solid rock music stations around.

I love what Sully Erna (Godsmack) is doing here with these kids. (What an unforgettable experience) Hopefully talent where people actually play instruments makes a comeback.

Thanks for posting that link...I forgot how much I enjoyed the music videos from that era...on to Thomas Dolby, David Byrne and A Flock of Seagulls.

An actual band able to create good music ...The Cars were great during their heyday.

Music now - if you want to be generous and call it that, is painful to listen to and completely talentless.

... the majority of modern "artists" cannot sing or even play an instrument

What happened??? lol

The Cards are definitely underrated. Their first two albums are certifiable classics, and they followed those up with a slew of catchy pop hits that had have stood the test of time. They are the perfect link between 70s and 80s music. Also highly underrated are the talents of guitarist Elliot Easton.

I like The Cars. Wasn't old enough or curious enough at the time to have gotten into any of their stuff other than what was on radio/MTV, but all of that is good quality relative to most of the other successful pop/rock bands of the era. I find it hard to believe that there's any less musical talent among young people now than at any other point in history, but like most people I still prefer the music that I listened to when I was a kid/teenager.
