Default E221 Bishop's cards and an ebay success story

Posted By: leon

You know you are hopelessly addicted when you wake up the morning before an auction is over dreaming about being out sniped . This green San Francisco card just arrived. I need to pay credit to the seller, Mike Berkus, whom I have never met personally (yet). Mr. Berkus runs the National Sports Collectors Convention, for folks that don't know. At any rate about 3 weeks ago I won a card from him on ebay. It was about an $85 card and I got it and felt it was trimmed. I politely emailed Mike about the issue and 5 minutes later I received my funds back in my paypal account. I then got an email stating his apology and to return it at my convenience. That was some of the best service I had ever gotten on ebay in over 1000 transactions, and there are some great ebayers I do business with. On this Bishops card, the one with Weaver, he communicated extremely well in several emails and did everything perfectly. I got the card today with the extra overnight postage paid by him. It had one of the best packaging jobs I have ever seen too, probably 6-7 layers of padding. What great experiences I had with this gentleman......and the card speaks for itself....It's definitely a keeper....(no Tbob, the restaurants are still doing poorly I just went in the hole for this one)

Great cards - now you have two colors. Do you know if the other 4 colors of the cards are represented in the team photos and if the same team photo can come in more than 1 color? there may be too few in existance to know. I have also bought a few cards from Mike - very happy with transactions.

I believe they can be found in different colors. I have sold three over the years and the same collector bought them all. Guess who? And I'm pretty sure he already had some but in a different color. It's interesting that the format varies between the two Leon posted- the way the names are arranged, and the way the typeface differs for the name Bishop & Co. They are an exceptional issue made on the thinnest, worst quality paper imaginable. It's amazing they have survived at all.

It was in the Minors section. I stumbled on it along with a few other nice cards E100, '28 PCL Exhibits, Unc. PCL slide card, etc. I had decent snipes on all them and was shut out. I wasnt even close on the E221. Looks nicer in Leons scan.

Found some more goodies in strange categories this week, maybe I'll do better this time.

Hey Dan....it was in the correct category, minor leagues. It probably would have gone a little higher if it were in the pre-1930 major league category as a 2nd one...especially since I would have been fighting JC and others for it .

Peter- I believe they can be found with each team in each color but Mark M would have to chime in to be sure. I believe he has the full set plus some.....take care...

As you probably know the sepia/natural color background is said to be the scarcest color....is that your sample?

Leon, actually I didn't know anything about which colors were the scarcest. Just glad I bought the card when I did, especially after seeing what you paid

Not sure if I'm mixing up E cards, but thought someone once mentioned the existance of an uncut sheet of five E221s. Anyone else ever see or hear anything about that?

The person with the most knowledge (imo) of any PCL collector has a sheet of red ones and it has 4-5 on it...and it's he who told me about the scarcity of colors a few days ago.....from scarcest to most common (common really shouldn't be used with any E221 but you know what I mean)....sepia/narural, purple, yellow, green, red, blue...I believe that was the order with the last 3 being pretty close. He estimated about 30 E221's known in the hobby....take care

edited to be more clear

Yes, Great cards !!!!!!!
I don't know this issue, and maybe I'm missing something, but ....
Leon's purple LA team is in black uniforms, while the other three examples of the LA team are in white uniforms.
So, there are 2 LA team cards, right ??

Good point. I cant find any reference to there being 6 "different" cards. Only 5 different teams (Sacto never issued). Lipsets book never mentions 2 cards for LA.

Its obvious there are 2 different LA cards, is one maybe the Sacramento team with the wrong caption???? I notice the number of names on each card still matches the number of players pictured. Did LA have black (away) uni's with white sox and hats??
