Strange, On the drive back from Fla. last week, there was a trivia question on Sirius about the three Dagos. The wife was in rare form as she pecked my brain about those 'other two' siblings. She adores the Sox and Fenway, but shows little interest in vintage, "Was Chris Speaker any good?". *Sigh*

In typical DiMaggio form, the Little Professor was a recluse in the Boston area and most had believed he'd passed many years ago. Perhaps the Hall will be calling?... RIP Domi

Default Dom

Fans should read "The Teammates: A Portrait of A Friendship" for good stuff about Dom, Pesky, Doerr, and Ted. Put Dom in the Hall instead of Manny.

I have to second the motion on Teammates. This book is fantastic and it really shows the friendship of the four players mentioned. Sad day..."The Needle" is the only one left now....

Really sad news for Red Sox Nation. Last I heard, He was was living one town over from me in Marion, MA, enjoying a quiet retirement. Dom was a real gentleman, he will be missed.

Default Even as a Yankee fan

I loved this old ditty...

Who hits the ball and makes it go?

Dominick DiMaggio.

Who runs the bases fast, not slow?

Dominick DiMaggio.

Who's better than his brother Joe?

Dominick DiMaggio.

But when it comes to getting dough,

They give it all to brother Joe.

(Refrain recited by Red Sox fans in the 1940s.)

Rest in Peace, a fine ballplayer. I don't expect he will get into the HOF but he is more deserving than some who are there.

excerpt from news story:

He cared deeply for the players of his era who did not receive pensions. For years he donated all the money he made from signing autographs to the American Professional Baseball Players Association, an organization that helped support older players not covered by a retirement plan.

The Little Professor, truly a class act.

I had a feeling this was coming soon.
I've been sending him a card and auto request to both addresses for the past year with all being RTS.
With Knowing him to be a good signer TTM for donations to B.A.T. , I figured he must be in poor health.

RIP and God be with the family.

He was a real class act and a gentleman. Never did see him play but he was my Dad's favorite player and to this day, my Dad glows when talking about him. Rest in peace Dom.

Default Dom DiMaggio

Lefty O'Doul was Dom's Manager and hitting instructor in the late 1930's in the PCL playing with the
SF Seals. Dom batted .361 in 1939 and was the PCL's MVP.

In the Summer of 1949, Dom started a 34-game hitting streak (a Red Sox record) that sparked the
Beantown rivalry with the Yankees, in one of BB's most exciting seasons.
It culminated in the Oct 2nd playoff game between Boston and NY in which the Yankees won the AL pennant.

David Halberstam's "Summer of '49" completely covers this exciting season....I very highly recommend this book.

You don't have to be a Red Sox or Yankees fan to enjoy reading it, as he covers both leagues in his story.

Lost amidst the sad news of Dom DiMaggio's passing was the death of Danny Ozark who managed the Phillies to 3 straight division championships.
RIP Dom and Danny.
