Got these a little while ago. Grabbed a box at a local auction labelled "Rejects"

I'm perfectly happy to take these rejects. A bunch more late 70s and early 80s commons from the box to go through. I know there are a couple of Ray Guy cards in there which I'm pretty happy about too.

Some are rough but there are a couple that are gems. I love finding stuff in the wild. Nothing makes me happier than an old box full of random cards.

Completed my 1960 Topps set with this one. Got a Beater Starr for $3, a Brown on eBay for $15 2 years ago. $8.74 for Johnny U makes 132/132, and the second highest price paid for any card. With the manageable set sizes and the fact most superstars are fairly cheap, vintage football is usually a fun and easy side project.

I really like the clean design of the fronts of the 1960 footballs, but this is not the best photograph of Unitas with the bug-eyed stare.

This pick up leaves me needing just one more 1962 Topps football bucks for my set, I still need #36 Max McGee.

The last two local shows I've attended (Dec and Feb) included dealers with tough 1972 Topps football hi numbers weird because you rarely see them. I completed my set a few years ago, so I won't buy duplicates unless I get a great price. The lowest the dealers will go was around $10 each for commons (which is around full retail price). I mean if I was still building my set I would go for it, but not ten bucks each to fill my duplicates box lol! I did pull the trigger on this Steve Spurrier high number #338 "Pro Action" card for $27 in nice shape again probably full retail price, but it's a dealer I like to buy from when I can and I had the extra cash. I went back later to look again at the other Spurrier he had hi number RC #291, but it was missing from the showcase.

It's been a few years since I won a Probstein auction. This card brings me to 27 of the 36 cards needed for the set (75% complete). 1935 National Chicle #10 Cliff Battles HOF RC. (sorry for the awful scan) $122.50 not bad $4 shipping and then $8.86 tax ouch! In my mailbox $135.36.

I don't buy many football cards (I currently own 5), and I don't buy many cards this new (I have exactly 2 cards printed after 2000), but I love watching this guy play. And I think this card looks awesome. He's unblockable on most plays, and he's either double-teamed or chipped most of the time. I don't think he gets as much credit as he deserves for how dominant he has been, and defensive lineman tend to not get massive hype in the card collecting world.

- 8 Years in NFL
- 8 Pro Bowls
- 7 times 1st team All Pro
- He won Defensive ROY in 2014, and here's he finished in Def. Player of the Year since:
2015: 2nd
2016: 4th
2017: 1st
2018: 1st
2019: 5th
2020: 1st
2021: 3rd
- Hoping he gets a Super Bowl ring tonight! edit: HE DID!!

BattersBox listed a couple of these last week one was $3.50 this one $4.25 I splurged and bought the higher priced card to finish my set. Prices are all over the place on these "bucks". I added a needed hockey card also to get the offered free shipping. Another set completed!

I just picked up a big lot of mostly 1970's college football pins for resale. There's a problem with the ribbons though, they smell musty from being stored. Any suggestion(s) on how to get the odor out would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff. I agree, it is a great set. There is really no other football card set like them. Very unique. No plans at the current time to complete them. But, you never know when opportunity will knock.

Those high numbers are hard to find. I never saw them in 1972 but got most of them from a high school friend of mine. He found them at a grocery store on his side of town. Glad I finished that set about 30 years ago.

Pickups from a local show.
61 Taylor was $6
63 Tittle in EX+ was only $12
Snead and Nisby were $10 total, which I think is a good price for purple sky SP's.

Getting close to finishing 61, 62, 63 and 67. Checklists are boring but nice to cross off. Tittle was a local guy, so he's always a preferred pickup for me.

A 6.5 on that. Another example of how many top-notch looking cards out there with those grades anymore lately.

Yeah, it's a sharp card. The vertical centering is poor, but the card is really nice for a 6.5. The corners are good, and there are no wrinkles or surface issues. I was in the market for a while before I got this one, and you wouldn't believe how many have print anomalies on the front. This one presents better than many in higher grades that I saw. I think they just grade extra tough on "key" cards from high pop sets nowadays.

If you're still dealing with that musty smell, try dryer sheets. It tends to do the trick when it comes to things like that. I've done it with old books and records with success. Just wrap a few of them around the ribbons and put them in a ziplock bag for a few days.

At the YouTube link above you can see Cliff Battles, Sammy Baugh and the Washington Redskins win the 1937 NFL Championship over the Chicago Bears in frozen Wrigley Field. The players said the frozen grass was like playing on razor blades. The period football music is a bit loud, but this highlight reel is awesome

Nice pickup. I’m closing in on finishing the 67 set, but I know nothing about wrestling. I didn’t know McDaniel was famous for other things and got sticker shock last week when I saw the prices on eBay for his card. Turns out he’s not a common like I thought

I have the entire run of Bowman's for George Taliaferro's career, autographed. George was the first African American drafted by the NFL. I enjoy the look on his face on the 48 Leaf rookie.

I don't think my last attempt to post went through - operator error I'm sure. Here is my George Taliaferro autograph collection. It consists of each of his Bowman cards for his career. I love the look on his face on the 48 Leaf rookie. George was the first African American drafted by the NFL.

Getting close to finishing 61, 62, 63 and 67. Checklists are boring but nice to cross off. Tittle was a local guy, so he's always a preferred pickup for me.
Why did Y. A. Tittle wear his helmet in so many card sets, and often he was the only player in the whole set that wore his helmet ?
Does anybody know ?

Like the '50 RCs, but Love the '51's with the team "championship" logo.

My understanding is that he didn't like the fact that he was bald ...

Very bald. He could have worn a turtle-neck sweater and gone trick or treating as roll-on deodorant.

Thanks, you've been a great crowd. Enjoy REO Speedwagon.

Picked this one up of Pete Pihos recently on the cheap. Gonna try to get a few more of the old timers throughout the year.

It's the Goal Line Art card set. Came out in about 1989 and went till 2016. The idea was to be the football equivalent of the Perez Steele. They're great for getting autographs on.
