Can anyone identify this photo...the team and any players...as well as tell if its an original photo with any value or reprint?
The actual photo is 13 3/4" by 11"

It certainly is a beautiful image and very large. It's also clearly a team from Springfield, as per the photographer's stamp and the "S" on the uniform. It is compelling that the player seated to the extreme right strongly resembles Christy Mathewson, who played in Taunton, Mass. in 1899. I'm not saying it is him, but does anyone else see the resemblance?... Calling Joe D.

when it comes to 'looks like matty' items....

but that one seems like a stretch to me. I don't see the resemblance as strong....

which means its probably him

Renowned photo expert Mark Rucker is visiting me at this very moment- he just looked at the image and confirmed what Joe said- not Matty. Hey, it was worth a shot. I know all too well in my years of looking at photos how many look alikes there are, but you have to start somewhere.

I think you have a photo of the Sprinfield Mass. Ponies, circa 1905 or so. The second player from the left in the back row is, I think, Luby. I will try working on the others when I get home. In the meantime here is a picture of Luby for comparison.

P.S. Barry, I think you meant the player on the far "left" bottom row as looking like Matty.

that the guy on the left resembled matty, the guy on the right somewhat does as well.

if you could morph the two together...

That was my original response when I saw the photo....was could it be Matty on the bottom left? LOL. I guess Joe or Barry neither have seen this one before? No way to tell if its a legitimate photo or a copy? What was this Sprinfield team? A minor league team? Semi-pro?

Here is a postcard of the 1908 Springfield Mass. Ponies Champions. Again,as an example, Luby appears in the back row, second from the right.

Note the emblem. Sure looks like the one in your photo.

P.S. That's Shauno Collins right behind the guy in the suit.

Does look similar Steve.....Springfield Mass. Ponies Champions....what kind of league is that? Kind of a neat piece either way....I have nothing like this in my collection...what would be a reasonable amount of money to offer the guy for this??? Assuming it's reasonable for me as well...lol

I think Steve's got it nailed...that's definitely Luby, and it's the Springfield team. Good detective work

The photo appears original and is from the early 1900s. The embossed name and pattern would appear on an original from the time.
