well-known whole sets from 1887--1956 (leaving Topps out).
Retail about 80.00, but can often be found at half-price.
Lipset's encyclopedia is a must. Check out re-prints at vcbc.com (is it still there?)

Lipset's book appears on eBay pretty regularly, too. I just bought it there this week for $36 USD w/shipping to Canada.

One that is mentioned often here is "The Monster" by Bill Heitman.

There is a BIN for this right now:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5189437712&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

$12 plus $4 shipping. There were 20, I just bought 1.

Can't comment on it from experience, but have good expectations.

It's mostly pictures, but it is a huge beautiful and incredible book, Classic Baseball Cards the Golden Era (I think it goes from 19th century through the mid 50s, mine is in the other room and I am too lazy to go look) by Frank Slocum. Long out of print but they are around, on ebay, alibris.com, etc. EDITED TO ADD: Oh I see Julie already posted about it sorry for the duplication but I can certainly add my endorsement.

When I saw Julie's post on the particular book, I started doing a search and there are a few places that have the book but prices are 130+ but if its a great book then I am all for it. I need to check half price as she said and maybe I will get lucky.

I'd highly recommend the aforementioned books as well but also the Alan Hager book from the 90's is an incredible piece of work...I mean Sh#t. Sorry I couldn't resist!
