Default Great Deal or Rip Off

Posted By: Paul

I just won an M-101-5 Chance for a price that seems to good to be true. Do you think I got a great deal, or got fleeced? I asked the seller what he meant by the phrase "take a chance on Chance." He said it was just a joke and he had no doubts about authenticity. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Paul,
I would say you got fleeced, considering the card is likely not genuine. Based on the frame around the border, the picture and the overall look of the card I would say it's gotta be fake. I looked a few other of his items and there were a few other questionable items...

The card is not a good. As nick mentioned, the gap between the black frame and the poicture is too large. It should look like this

Jay

I like to sit outside, drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

no matter how many times I see it(he had it in the chatroom last night)! Seriously, the HUGE gap between photo and black border in the card you show is a dead givaway.

I agree with what the others are saying about that black border - on authentic cards from this set, the border hugs the photo. There's too much space in between the border and the photo on this one, a trait commonly found with the reprints. Fortunately $28 is not too much to lose....

Thanks for you insights. I'm usually pretty good about spotting fakes from this set, but somehow this looked ok to me. But I think you are all correct that the wide gap is suspicious. I've written the seller and told him about the doubts several vintage collectors have about this card. I'll see what he says. I haven't sent the money yet.

this card is real. i am a pretty good expert when it comes to cards like the frank chance we see here. this series will draw question each time it surfaces though so make sure to have it authenticated

I forgot to post the final chapter of this story. I contacted the seller, and explained to him my concerns. Both he and his consignor contacted me, and both were willing to let me not pay for the card with no hard feelings. I think both sincerely felt it was an original card. The consignor said he might send it off for grading. I told him that if it came back authentic I would pay my original bid, his grading fee, plus a bonus for the card.
