Default N172 - Red Sox connections?

Posted By: Jason Carota

My collection focuses solely on Red Sox players in Sox uniforms. I have always wanted to add an N172 to my collection, however, and I was wondering if anyone featured in the set has some sort of Red Sox connection. My knowledge of 19th century sets is limited, so as far as I know, a connection could be very obvious.

Frank Foreman has an 1889 Old Judge card and played for the 1901 Red Sox.

Duke Farrell played a few years with the Red Sox at end of his career.

Or you can go for the many N172 Boston NL cards like King Kelly, etc.

Deacon McGuire played for and managed the Red Sox in 1907-1908 and Hugh Duffy managed the team in the early 20's besides the 2 players mentioned above

Thanks everyone for the responses. So far I think I am going to go with Farrell. He had the longest tenure with the Sox, and he was on the 1903 WS team.

If you look for a Farrell card make sure you find a Chicago version because there's another Farrell in the old judge set who isnt him but could possibly be mislabeled as him,Ive seen it before. Duke Farrell is only shown with Chicago

That would be the right player but there is more than one pose of him so you dont have to look for that exact card. As long as it says Chicago you're fine. The other one is John Farrell who is pictured on Washington and Baltimore

Another card of his that I have seen has Farrell pictured with a bat on his shoulder. The team caption at the bottom says "Chicago." In the card I posted above, the team caption says "Chicagos." According to the '07 SCD, there are two cards of his - Chicago National League and Chicago Players League. Am I correct in assuming "Chicago/Bat on shoulder" is the National League version?

Im not sure which card of his is a PL version because my book doesnt list it but he has 5 different poses available and according to my book and notes i have at least 4 of them can found with both Chicago and Chicagos(sometimes as Chicago's) on the front. The PL card will have (PL) following his name or in the bottom right hand corner of the picture.Chances are if you run across 10 of his cards,10 of them will be the regular version, thats how tough the PL version is

I figured the PL variation was quite rare when I saw the price difference between the two. Thanks for you help, John.
