Default Pays to buy graded

I won an old judge card on ebay that was ungraded that was on such thin paper stock that sunlight could be see to shine through when held up to it. This was not disclosed in the listing and there are others going up in the next few days I would ask about before bidding. I have reached out to the seller informing him of my plans to return. Buyer beware when buying raw.

It was probably skinned. He either doesn’t know better or hoped you didn’t know better.

Pete, Do you have any pics of the cards? Would love to see them. Did you return just based on thickness or was there other things that compounded to that being the point of return?

I do have pictures but the upload failed. There is no other issue than thickness. The front is nice enough that I accepted a generous partial refund and we both moved on.

Happy to hear that you got it worked out. I am more interested in the alteration of the card and what it looks like. Would you be able to email or pm me pics? Thank you.

Which OJ card was it? I asked that seller if his N28 Cap Anson was original or a reprint, and he replied that it was original and from his father's collection who had a " good eye". I bid and won the N28 Anson.

This guy has sold enough baseball tobacco cards to be familiar thickness. I see that he has now added a side pic to some of his listings. Where it's not shown...buyer beware. I'm also troubled by a few of his cards. Take a look at this N28 Ward card. The front looks like your everyday reprint. The backside looks legit. Possible re-backing? For the record I don;t know this seller and have never bought any of his cards, so purely my speculation.

That Ward really looks fake. Not excited about the back either

When an N28 wears down, the borders look like they crumble away. This one is heavily worn, but like a modern card.

I bought an old judge card that was ungraded, had decent eye appeal but I thought would grade as a 1. I submitted it, it graded as a 4, and is now the highest graded example in existence.

Pays to buy ungraded.

My point being, just like about anything in life, it just depends

Completely agree...

The best deals I've ever gotten have been raw/ungraded. If you do your homework, it's much more rewarding to collect that way as well.

Sure there are plenty of shady dealers out there, but with thousands of altered cards residing in numbered PSA Slabs, the buyer must do his due diligence either way. And fortunately, eBay's return policy provides more than adequate buyer protection from fraud and bad listings like the one above.

The screwdown holders are scratched-up. My initial thought was no good, but I'm not good at judging from scans. Any thoughts on his OJ's? The craquelure does not look right to me. I don't have the stomach to bid on these even if they were in a tpg holder. Rob

The contrast on that Ward seems way off.

Adding that I'm not an A&G expert so I wanted to back up my comment with an image rather than just conjecture. Here's the image posted earlier next to an SGC graded example from Ebay (not mine):

The Mack looks good, but has anyone seen it without the numbering on top?

For full disclosure, I was the buyer.

The Ward side-to-side comparison makes it obvious that it’s a reprint. Look at the shading below the arm and especially below the bill of the cap. It’s very subtle but the copier used assumed too much and darkened it in considerably.

I didn’t notice anything obviously wrong about the N172s except the selection seemed a bit too nice, not enough commons.

Default OJ's

Derek, I hope you got a good one. I have not seen it w/o a number, maybe it's worn away. I did have a $500 bid on the Mack. The N28 Ward looks super fake. I would bid on the McCormick, but I was hoping the OJ book guys might weigh in, but maybe they are bidding. I hate buying fakes and having Jay tell me, "Sorry, Rob, send it back and get your money back." He has a Sid Farrar coming up. I dunno, when I was younger I might have rolled the dice.

Aren't OJ's supposed to have the picture attached to the cardboard backing? IF so, do these cards have a picture attached or are the photos scanned onto the backing?

Buyer beware.
Buy the card not the slab.
There's a sucker born every minute.

I believe that each term should be among the thought processes of ALL buyers.

Based on the prices, people thought they were good. When I sell graded cards on eBay, they go for 50% of retail and dealers scoop them up and re-list them and get full price. Luckily there are plenty of other cards for me to buy. Rob
