Just finished watching a program on TV on the Collectors channel. 20 tips on collecting baseball cards, I did not write them down and doing this from memory. Besides the somewhat bad tips it was full of errors. I don't remember the exact order and all of them but this is the basic layout they suggest.

Collect Honus Wagner
Collect Ty Cobb
Cracker Jacks
Get the proper tools (Loop, ruler, black light)
Go to National
Do not alter or fix your cards
Do not grade all of your cards
Collect sets
Learn as much about the sets you collect (Key cards)
Join a website for information
Collect errors or variations
Learn about all the variations
Collect Mickey Mantle
Buy Tin Types
Collect High number cards
Do not buy cards from 80's or later
Collect Hall of Famers
#1 Buy cards from the 30's & 40's (They say because the earlier cards are in such high demand that these years are still affordable and in time will go up)

That is the basic order they gave and there where a number of people in the hobby in the show. Doug Allen, Steve Verkman, a person from Leland and a Topps person.

Some of that seems valid to me.... especially that last one about 30's and 40's cards.

Prices on T206s seem unreasonably high, of late. Cracker Jacks, too. And recently the E120s seem to have taken off. I'm thinking that Goudeys, Diamond Stars, and DeLongs will be next. And old Exhibit cards. Then Play Balls. Might make sense to get ahead of the crowd and fill in those empty spaces in the 30's and 40's before prices get out of hand.
