"AUTHENTIC" graded cards are not always what that "A" represents them to be ?
As most of you on this forum know, I'm not a fan of Graded cards. But, even I realize that there are times when....."you have to go with the flow".
I prefer to collect Sportscards as I did when I was a kid...... the feel of the cardboard.... to caress them.... and, to smell them And, don't laugh, that last factor is an important one because would you like to deal with cards that have been subjected to a damp environment ? I don't think so ! Anyhow, a year ago I submitted to SGC this Jennings from my AB 460 subset. And of course, I first cracked it out of its original "A" holder before I submitted it to the guys at SGC. . SGC returned this card to me with a grade "60"....which now makes my Jennings/AB 460 card the highest graded one of its kind. Therefore....do I now try my luck with these two gems ? . . Hey guys....how's about sharing with us some of your similar experiences with the "world of graded" cards ? ? TED Z . |

Maybe it's an American Beauty thing???? because I sure don't think this one I have is really in FAIR condition.

I think a huge part of it is the grader, for real. Check out this Bastian that just sold on eBay not too long ago - looks quite small to me (trimmed), but still received a letter grade. SGC is usually pretty good about this, I bet this one slipped through their fingers. What do you think, Ted?

Congrats on the Jennings Ted, that is a big difference.
I would LOVE to see you resubmit the Plank (that is a truly stunning card, btw).

I have never really evolved from the grading of the 1970's. I would still call the T215 "g" and the T214 "mint'...
That Plank is a great card. I'd hate to put it in the mail, but you could always have it reviewed at a show.

I guess it depends on the person, grading the card.

The Plank has color added. I think it would be a waste of money. On a card where it is close on size like the AB, I can see taking a chance at getting a number grade.

NJ It does appear to be on short side (top to bottom), as is evident by the gap in the upper part of the SGC frame. The SGC grader probably had a hectic day grading 100's of cards, and this one was graded near the end of the day. TED Z . |

I have many HOFers with this grade, they all appear to be 8 or better quality.....

Hi Rob Your Sweeney is absolutely the nicest T214 that I have seen. Try re-submitting it....you may luck out this time. TED Z . |

Yeah, what's the deal with that T214...does it measure short? My only guess is slight trimming.

The Sweeney looks great but I suspect the A is because the bottom border is a little concave.

Bastian--
Pardon my temerity,
but that Bastian looks okay to me. It's a "diamond cut" for sure, but the top and bottom sides are parallel and the corners look okay; that's why I'd think that it's untrimmed. It might be slightly short, but not unusually so. Just my opinion on it. |

Thanks, Ted, I think REA sent it in for grading and actually I got a better deal on it because it was graded "Auth" instead of a number grade. I guess I'm going to do a Jeff Sweeney back run now

DITTO....for all three "Auth" graded cards I posted to start this thread. Six years ago, I acquired the AB 460 Jennings for less than $100. I was only the 4th bidder on ebay for it. It's like you said....I got a good deal on it since it didn't have a numerical grade. I acquired the Plank with a very reasonable cash/trade deal because it's an "A". The red Cobb/SOVEREIGN 460 card is extremely rare (less than 6 known); and, I acquired it for a very fair price....again, because it is an "A". TED Z . |

Actually, I do not understand how any Grading Co. can assign an "A" to any T206 American Beauty card whose top-to-bottom dimension is within the specified limit. As is the case with this Jennings card. TED Z . |
