Default Show Me Some Jackie Robinson Stuff

With all the debates over his RC, time for a thread for all things JR. Try to post one item a day only so we can keep this going round-robin-style for a while. I will open with this card:

Small premium issued to members of the All-American Sports Club around 1955. Others in the set I am aware of include Duke Snider (labeled "Don Newcomb" for some reason) and Rocky Marciano

that's an amazing collection of jackie! love those bond bread cards, don't know what it is about the black and white that makes it look so awesome.

recently picked up a jackie 1955 doubleheader. really happy with that one. i'd post it but trying to attach pictures on here is way beyond my pay grade

I remember staring at a Cracker Jack Jackson for sale at my local card shop as a kid and thinking "gee that's kind of an ugly card" and bought this Jackie instead. You never know how this stuff works out.

Took a shot at this signed Jackie 15 years ago from a local seller in the Toronto area. I had it graded and it came back a 9 from PSA!

Here's my 1947 Jackie Robinson Pinback with original Ribbons & Charms. I understand this is a tough pin to find, got lucky and found it on ebay some years ago. Here's the description I put together for this pin:

"Recognized as one of the two toughest Robinson pinbacks to locate, this example features Jackie in his Kansas City Monarchs Uniform from 1945. The Monarchs logo was removed from the photo and the team name "Dodgers" was later added to the pin. This pin is not only from Jackie's rookie year, it pre-dates his pins wearing a Dodger uniform."

We shall see. I feel pretty confident a 5k card in Jan is not all the sudden a 30k+ card in March. This happens on occasion in every type of market.

I was hesitant to purchase it based on the white back thinking it was maybe fake or a reprint but decided to go ahead just in case it was legit.
Crease free according to the ad, but it does have some corner bumps. I paid $225 U.S. but have no idea if that is high or not?
Thoughts?

Can't say, Dale. They have been really hard to find so there are no good price points. I would think that $225 for a JR of the era is a good deal.

Thanks, Adam. I was kind of thinking the same.

I'm glad, although it was after the fact, that I seen yours and Deans to confirm it was more than likely a legit copy.
That white back, after seeing/reading most exhibits, etc, were cream colored concerned me.

Adam, I love those 73s!

Here's a weird "card." 1969 Shindana Afro-American History Mystery card.
1969JRShindana

And this day in Jackie history -- March 31, 1965 Jackie was at Holman Stadium as a commentator with ABC-TV. The game was a "warm-up" for the ABC-TV broadcasting system as the network was to launch a "Monday Night Baseball" series that season. Robinson was teamed with veteran sportscaster Chris Schenkel for the 1965 season. Yet another first.

A beauty, Rob.

This week in Jackie Robinson history -- Feb. 4, 1952. Jackie signed on as a television executive of a major network (NBC). Yet another first.

Default Obscure card?

Saw Cavs guard Darius Garland wearing this on the bench during a game the other day. Couldn't figure out what the "10cents" refers to. Was the image lifted from an obscure card maybe?

I recently purchased a postcard of Minnie Minoso that I thought, once received, would also have the lines like yours. I was thinking, as I don't know much about exhibits or postcards, it was just some sort of variation or something.

It still pains me to know there was a member here sometime ago who had one for sale for $30 dollars.
I drug my heels and it was gone about a week or so later.

A couple ended on GM cards within the last month and, IIRC, they went for around $400 and $600.

Cool piece, Joe.

This week in Jackie Robinson history, in early 1950, filming for _The Jackie Robinson Story_ was underway. Most of the baseball scenes were filmed at Gilmore Stadium, home of the PCL's Hollywood Stars.

Less than a week for the MLB and PA to hash things out if they want to preserve Jackie Robinson Day on April 15th, which just so happens to be the 75th anniversary of Jackie's MLB debut. Would be a shame if the strike forced it to be pushed. Scott Boras has been eyeing March 15th as an outside date when things would be worked out. Let's hope he's right and the season can kick off in style to celebrate Jackie's semisesquicentennial.

This one is from the presumed Feldstein find. I purchase the 24 card set from the Baseball Card Society back in 1990. I saved all the related data so there is some provenance to these cards along with Mr. Robinson.

Regardless of what it is or where it came from. It is cool, old, and mine!

Cheers,

B. T.

Dang I posted this twice in this thread. Sorry about that.

The Shindana's aren't weird at all. They are from a game. There are two varieties, yellow back and red back (came in perforated sheets).

Here is part of a box cover:

The board game was pretty basic. It came with puzzles and each card had a value in puzzle pieces. Answer correctly and you get some pieces. Here is the Joe Louis puzzle:

Oddly, there wasn't a Jackie Robinson puzzle.

A few years ago a set of cabinet sized cards was discovered. The art on some of the cards differs from the art on the regular cards. Perhaps a prototype or proof set?

I've not seen the Robinson in the large format.
