Day 152 – 1 June 2024
Today’s sign is a smaller one from the 1950s. This sign is bright orange and made of cardboard and measures 14.5 x 11 inches. It was displayed in the window at Memorial Stadium where you would buy your tickets. |

Day 153 – 2 June 2024
Today’s sign is a bright orange almost red with blue letters. This is another directional sign telling drivers Memorial Stadium is to the right. The sign celebrates the two WS championships from 1966 and 1970 so I assume it is from the 1970s or before 1983. The sign is metal and measures 24 x 18 inches. This is an awesome sign. |

Charlie,
Some great looking signs you’ve been posting. The one today is fairly rare and do not see often. They did make a cardboard version as well, but have only seen a couple over the years (I don’t have an example). |

Day 154 – 3 June 2024
Today’s sign is another directional Memorial Stadium sigh that provides an arrow telling a driver the stadium is straight ahead. This sign is from the 1970s and would have a Oriole or Colt sigh that fit to the right side of the sign. The sign measures 24 x 24 inches. |

I recently got this Frank Robinson 5x7 b&w photo and it looks kind of like the 1967 Bethlehem Steel cards but the picture is different and the caption on the back is different. The picture is on thin semi-glossy paper, and has perforations along the top front edge.

Day 155 – 4 June 2024
Moving from signs, today I am showing you an interesting original piece of art from the 1972-1973 Slurpee 7-11 Cups of Brooks Robinson. I am not familiar with the artist but this example looks great with the black and white matting next to an actual cup. The drawing is very similar to the cup but the orange on the cup is a bit red on the drawing. I have seen other players over the years on ebay but never another Oriole. I assume this is a 1/1. |

Day 157 – 6 June 2024
Today I am showing you a few of my 1975 Clarance Mengler Baseball’s Best 3x5 inch unlicensed post cards for signatures. This is a 125 card set that the MLBPA went after Mr. Mengler as the cards were not sanctioned by the MLB. Mengler created these cards for signatures but ran into legal challenges by the MLB so he stood down with the set. MLBPA was upset with other companies, too, such as TCMA. I believe he created as many as 125 cards each in a set and sold 100 sets and kept 25 sets for himself. I have Frank Robinson with the Indians. Included in the first picture is also McNally with the Expos but this one is an original hand drawn in pencil by Mr. Mengler’s artis, Mr. Neil Patterson. At the time when the set was created, Patterson was a student at a Chicago Art School. The 1st picture shows Brooks, Blair and Singleton are are part of the set but not originals. You can tell if the card is an original if stamped on the back like the second picture. The next picture are originals of Grich, Singleton, May, Belanger and Blair. These are part of the set but original hand drawn. The Bumbry at the top left is not part of the set. Mr. Mengler told me he planned another set in 1976 but he did not get to it based on the MLBPA legal challenge. The last picture shows these are originals with the markings on the back. I had several conversations with Mr. Mengler and was able to get these originals and the insights above. He sent me a photo copy of an article published about his sets in 1975. More on this set tomorrow. |

Like yesterday, I am showing you two more 1975 Clarance Mengler (Artist Neil Patterson) Baseball’s Best 3x5 inch unlicensed post cards for signature but these two are “originals” of Brooks and Palmer.” I was very excited to find these and work a deal with Mr. Mengler. Took a lot of effort, but had to have them and a deal was struck. I may have the Brooks original and copy framed together for display. |

Day 159 – 8 June 2024
Today I am showing some pins I found recently. The larger one at the top is from the 1966 WS. I have been looking for this one for a while but it was too expensive. I lucked into this one. The bottom right one from 1973 is unique. I have not seen this one before. The lower left white Johnny Oates button is unique. Never saw this one before. Oates played with the Orioles in 1970 and 1972. He coached with the Orioles in 1989-1991 and then managed the Orioles in 1991 – 1994. |

With the history of only having produced 125 sets before stopping, I am assuming these 125 are part of "#2 - Original printed versions". If that is true, I don't understand what "#3 - Not originals" are. If he stopped printing, then the "not originals" would be reproductions printed at a later time? I also don't understand what you meant by the Bumbry not being part of the set. Is it a proof that was created but not part of the set that was eventually printed? Thanks in advance for any clarity here. I still lack one of these for my Paul Blair player collection and when I see one I want to be sure I understand what I am looking at. |

Jeff, you are correct. the original pencil hand drawn are 1/1. They have the initials “CSM with date and original art” marking. The official cards part of the 125 sets I understand have the stamp marking “copyright symbol
Mengler-Peterson 1975.” Sorry if confusing. The first post was a few original art and copies. Second post the next day was Brooks and Palmer original art. |

Jeff, forgot Bumbry. Al Bumbry is not part of the 1975 Mengler Set. Mengler was going to do another set in 1976 but Mengler had issues with MLBPA so he did not do the set. When I talked to Mengler he said he had another Oriole u forgot who it was. He then found the card and recalled or researched as being the Bee Al Bumbry.

Today I am showing you a photo of the Baltimore Orioles Team getting their photo take by none other than the manager, Earl Weaver. Weaver can be seen with a camera on a tripod with the players and coaches all smiling from year to year. Will assume this photo is the early 1970s. Brooks and Etch are both clapping. Belanger and McNally along with Boog are enjoying the photoshoot. Not sure I see Palmer. Pretty cool picture. |

Day 161 - 10 June 2024
Today I am showing you a small soft bound book with Brooks on the cover published by the Sporting News. The book has World Series Records from 1903 to 1970. Back on the 1960-1970 there were so many iconic publications and photos featuring the Orioles and Brooks. The Brooks photo here is pretty cool of Brooks with his flannel uniform and iconic glove getting ready to catch a pop up. Last edited by Chstrite; 06-11-2024 at 01:42 PM. Reason: Wrong details |

Then, you see a photo and details of the latest inductee to the Shrine of Immortals – Babe Phelps. He played professionally from 1931 – 1942 with a career average of .310. In 1967 and 1968 Topps published two pin-ups for kids. The 1967 and 1968 copies are the same but one is printed in the USA and the other was printed in Canada. The 1967 copy is easy to find and can grade nicely with PSA. The 1968 O-Pee-Chee or Canada version is hard to find with good centering, as depicted in the picture. The set includes 32 different players and they are 5 in X 7 in. They could be found in wax packs folded up. |

Day 165 – 14 June 2024
Today I am showing you a PSA graded Brooks Robinson 1960 Topps Salesman Sample cut from a panel. The Salesman Sample Panels were another way for Topps to advertise their cards. The salesman would use these to promote that years cards. The 1960 version panels came in 3 card strips with two of the cards featuring part of an add on the reverse side and the 3d card having an example of the actual card back, but of a different player. PSA graded my Brooks as “Authentic. Notice the back of the card. |

Day 166 – 15 June 2024
Similar to yesterday, I am showing you another Salesman Sample but this one is of Brooks Robinson in 1962. I tried to get this graded with PSA but they could not reference it to anything despite having graded complete panels in the past. They graded at least 4 other complete panels with three players each to include one with Clemente. I believe there is another Brooks Robinson 1962 salesman sample from 1962. I have seen a poorly cut version on Net54. Not sure why, but PSA would not grade my 1962 salesman sample handcut. PSA graded a few others from 1960 (Bob Purkey, Hal Smith and Cletis Boyer). Having bothe the 1960 and 1962 is pretty rare and cool. |
