Val explained McNeely's critical role in Washington's 1924 AL Pennant and World Series success. Here he is in 1924 styling his soon-to-be "bad hop grounder"-stroke.

That R312 DiMaggio is a nice one; I don't see them that often.

Here's a Magee to add to Derek's post. Not sure why he doesn't get more love. He was one of the top left fielders of his era both by traditional stats and by WAR (Baseball Reference has him as the 14th best left fielder of all time, ahead of several Hall of Famers and second only to Fred Clarke in the 1900-1919 period). He is actually the highest ranked left fielder not in the Hall, with the exception of steroid players and Pete Rose.

![]() Odd factoid about Mostil: He led the league in fielding % by a centerfielder in 1925 and then led the league in errors by a centerfielder in 1926.

The Johnny Mostil-fest continues with (from top) Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 of his W573 strip cards, though I believe Type 3 cards, which are thicker and wider, were machine cut and issued individually, and thus not distributed in strip format, and therefore are not strip cards.

That’s fantastic, Brian. My favorite pose in the set, along with Mitze. Here’s another trimmed toughie. Not because it’s Wolverton, but because it’s green.

I definitely could gladly show more PCL cards, but don't want folks to think this is strictly a West Coast minor league thread. So here's a beat up 1914 T213-2 Coupon card of Mike Donlin that, because of a little scrape, my eyes still want to see as ".200 batter 7 years" instead of the actual ".300".

Larry Moe, do my eyes deceive me or is that a Zeenut Coveleski with coupon? I've been looking for one without the coupon for probably more than 25 years. I can't imagine having one with the coupon.

Cliff Blankenship only played three MLB seasons, including the two he spent in Washington. For Washington, he got a total of 38 hits for a .235 average. I have no idea what his salary was, but it is still easy to say that he would have been "cheap at twice the price".
For it was Blankenship, out with an injury, who was deemed available to travel west and scout a prospect the team was interested in. And on that trip, he detoured to evaluate a second prospect named Walter Johnson. Immediately recognizing Johnson's potential, Blankenship signed him to a contract on the spot. Sealing the deal by agreeing to fund Johnson's return to Idaho in the event he didn't measure up in Washington, Blankenship reportedly replied: "Sure, but son, the last thing you are going to need is return money." https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1617725222 |

Closest I've got is a D311 Dillon and a beater at that. Here's a nice couponed Zee of Pop.

Never afraid to show a beater, especially if it completes a virtual team set. Here is a Pop with a shave and a haircut, two bits. I guess the toenail clipping came at no extra charge.

1936 S & S Game cards of Kiki Cuyler, both fairly uncommon tan back and the common green back. Note the misspelling of Cuyler's last name on the tan back version seen on the left. It would logically lead one to believe that the tan back cards were issued before the green backs.
