Awesome Goudey Ruth-- what eye appeal. Cannot imagine many in that grade looking that great.

Super cool Polar Bear!

Ok, you guys are breaking out some big guns now.

Ian, how did I not know you were collecting DSs? And autographed ones, no less? That's a pretty cool idea. The cards are just gorgeous. SOmewhat reminiscient of the Goudey cards, but with very detailed backgrounds, which I like. You need to send me some links, my friend!

Matt-I might just have to snag one of those pictures for my desktop. A little ncentive to keep hitting the set. I have a long, long way to go, and since I know there are a lot of cards from other sets I will be adding, I know it's going to be a marathon. But aren't those cards beautiful. Did you giggle like a kid when you had them all fanned out like that? They're not even my cards, and I admit I had a bit of an excited chuckle. I really love seeing stuff like this.

Chris-fantastic! Those two, especially the Cobb on shoulder, have some really nice eye appeal. Damn, you are making me want to start my Hall of Fame chase now! Congratulations!!

Dan-it's absolutely your call, but if you wash that Clarke, you've got nerves of steel. I'd be absolutely scared to death soaking a CJ, especially a '14. To be honest, I kinda like the caramel staining. It adds character to the card. And that's as strong a two as you will ever find. The centering is perfect, and the eye appeal is just beautiful. Good luck. If you decide to go ahead, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes as planned.

Joshua-you're killing me. Tell me you didn't actually pull that out of a pack. Oh, and it's a PB. That kicks the cool factor up for me. My favorite back. I love the dark blue with white lettering. Nice pick up! I want to add one of those so badly, and it has nothing to do with the demand. That's one of the coolest cards in the set.

See, guys, it's nights like this one, when I can scroll through the pickup thread, and see some really incredible pieces of history. It just makes me fall in love with our hobby all over again. Literally. We hear about the idiots like Mr. Mint, and shilling, and people trying to sell fakes. It could be easy to get discouraged. But I come here, and it's like Cher slapping me five across the eyes. "Snap out of it!"

In the grand scheme of things, when it comes to my own collection, I'm still a newborn. I'm learning how to crawl. But now I've got my big boy pants on, and I'm ready to start building. You guys inspire me. You really do. And I love seeing everybody enjoying themselves.

/chapeau. I tip my hat to you all.

Bill

Bill, you make some really strong points...thanks for your input. I'm not 100% sure I'll follow through, I'm terrified of damaging the card. Also am not sure if this level of staining can be significantly improved to make it worth the risk so I definitely want to get more opinions from experienced soakers.

Absolutely. You're going about this the right way, so no matter what you ultimately decide, Dan, you'll be making an informed decision. Usually this is where I say "test this out on a common", but even a common '14 CJ is going to cost you well over a C Note, especially with the market the way it is for them now.

The only thing that gets me about soaking is that you really can't just test a small area. It's not like the label says on color safe bleach, advising you to "test a small, inconspicuous area." It's like Yoda says. "There is no try. Do, or do not." You either have to drop the card in the solution (distilled water, if I remember correctly), or not do it. The card has to lay completely flat.

Bill - yeah I was like a kid in a candy store when I got those cards. I put them all in the card savers then I cataloged them into my spreadsheets. I have a master sheet that I keep track of the date the card was purchased, the cost, where I acquired it, and the condition. Then I have subset spreadsheets that they go into (portraits, HOFers, SLers, bat showing, glove showing, baseball showing, and horizontals). There is definitely a method to my "monster" madness!!

Once I get to 450 cards I plan on putting them into binder pages so they can be enjoyed the ole fashioned way!!

Hey Bill, how you been? The "idea" to go after these was born wholly on this board. I saw some of Sean's signed Goudeys, then made a group purchase on the board about a year and half ago. "Irwin Fletcher" had an amazing collection of signed Diamond Stars for sale and I ended up snagging all but one of his HOFers (still kicking myself for passing on the one, Lloyd Waner). I have been picking them up here and there ever since, as well as other signed pre-war stuff. I think DS are perfect for autographs and given they have similar color schemes, look great displayed together. They seem to come up for sale here and there. I was very happy to score the Terry on eBay, and another board member ended up with the Waner from the same seller. I'll email you some pics (some day I'll take time to upload my cards to site)

Made my first transaction through the B/S/T and added two new things to my collection with one card.

Added my first Eppa Rixey card to my HOFer collection and added my first E-series card to my collection.

Loved the somewhat goofy cap askew on face with the great blue/red color contrast...

Sweet pick ups Erick. Wags/Gehrig look great, and I really think the E121 Sisler is an underrated card (know I love mine). Such a classic action shot of him.

ADDING- my post is sandwiched by great cards. Definitely a nice 1.5 Dan, congrats.

Amazing haul Erick!

Nice Cobby Luke!

It has been awhile since I have added to my E96 set. Very happy to find this crease-free beauty at a fair price:

I picked this R316 premium photo for my Sam Rice card collection in the recent Mile High Auction. But I am keenly disappointed to have been outbid on this Holsum Bread - Rice card in last week's SCP Auction:
http://catalog.scpauctions.com/1921-...-LOT28438.aspx
I was about to fall asleep at my PC shortly after midnight, so I increased my already-winning max bid, confident that I would win this card! "You win some, and you lose some" - but, the losses stay with me a whole lot longer than the wins, especially when I am the first under bidder!

Doing well, Ian. I e-mailed ya back after downloading some pictures

Luke, those Caramels just jump off the screen. They're truly beautiful.

Erick-congrats on some great additions. I'm going to be the last pre-war collector on Net 54 to own that Gehrig at the rate I'm going.

Dan-I don't know if PSA is any harder on staining. But that Lajoie is incredible no matter what the grade.

CrazyDiamond-that's one of the nicest PSA 1s I've ever seen. Great eye appeal!

That's funny Jeff! Rockledge is a nice little town and place to raise a family.

Jesse, did you know that before Mark Koenig played in Cincinnati, he was a member of the famed Murder's Row from the 1927 New York Yankees?

Basically, it was a combination of:

Earle Combs in center
Mark Koenig at short
Babe Ruth in right
Lou Gehrig at first
Bob Meusel in left
Tony Lazzeri at second

They had a couple guys playing catcher and third base. But that first six hitters in the lineup were just murder on opposing pitchers. The '27 Yankees were 110-44. They swept the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 in the World Series.

No doubt! I just saw that. Some really great color, especially when you consider how long that baby has been in circulation.
