Wow Larry, you're really burning up the 1952 Bowman Large & small sets! Congratulations! Nice cards!

Not truly "pickups" unless you count sitting in a forgotten box for 25 years a pick up. Happy with all except the Brown. Sent in two of them. Both received a grade of 4. The cards are night and day. This is the better looking one.

Great cards! If the Brown doesn't have any hairline creases and the back isn't rubbed I'd crack it out & re-submit it. "Nice finds".

These two cards arrived today via eBay completing my 1953 Bowman football set
![]() Lynn Chandnois All American at Michigan and a US Navy Vet played seven years for the Steelers. This SP card " books" for $75 in NM condition. Frank Gifford of course passed away this past August. All American at USC. During a 1960 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he was knocked out by Chuck Bednarik on a passing play, suffering a severe head injury. He was out of action for 18 months. After his death, an autopsy on his brain revealed that he lived with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a disease closely related to repeated head trauma. This SP cards "books" for $250 in NM condition. Wow Photo-Bucket was working tonight so I could reduce the size of the scans! Larry ![]() ![]()

Three hits 1952 Bowman Large arrived today via eBay purchase. #1 Norm Van Brocklin is the most "expensive" NM book $375. I like the white football on the Van Brocklin card, and I learned right here these were used in night games 1929-1956.

Another hit to my 1952 Bowman Small set described as a Poor condition filler (my kind of card)! I picked it up on eBay along with the Tarkenton RC, but Y.A. went for a little "bath" LOL! Tossed Y.A. in the kitchen sink, wiped him off with a dish rag, then dried him out between paper towels (your typical soak). Before pic on the left, after pic on the right with no improvement on the reverse. I paid 5.8% NM value for this card. I didn't notice the card was trimmed or just suffered from some weird factory cut until after Y.A. got cleaned up. Also the crease in the upper left is not noticed until after all the dirt was washed off. I thought the stain on the pennant was gum or wax but it wouldn't rub off and ended up being more dirt.

I haven't been on the boards too much in the past few weeks. It was nice to get back to looking through threads and see all these pickups from everyone that I hadn't seen before.
I picked this card up a month ago at one of our local shows from Matt. I posted about it on my blog, but apparently forgot to show it in here. The Large version of this is the #3 card on my "want" list. I didn't have this one either and was so excited to get it. ![]() I also picked up the Kinnick for my All-American set. I posted it in that thread. Matt told me that he'd had it since he was young, but had picked up an upgrade. I really like knowing a little history about the particular card. It was actually mentioned a few posts ago about how some kid in the 50s probably had the card. I've thought quite often lately that it would be really cool if the cards could talk. Where have they been? How did they get into the shape that they are in? I did pick up three other commons from Matt, nothing really worth posting, though. Just cards for my WVU collection. If you're interested, you can read the post here. Thanks, Matt! All of these cards moved onto another good home. |

I've been gone the past 3.5 weeks on a great adventure. Helping my oldest son (in picture) move his wife and three kids (7, 5, 3 months) from Vail Colorado to Napa California. Think 26 foot U-Haul towing one vehicle, and me at the wheel of the "family truckster" with the grandkids
![]() ![]() I enjoyed keeping up with all the activities here on Net54, and am REALLY looking forward to Tuesday when I can pick up all the mail the USPO is holding for me ![]() I flew into Denver, and my son picked me up at the airport. Before heading into the mountains leading to Vail, we made one last stop at what I consider the best "brick and mortar" baseball card shop in America. Bill's Sports Collectibles on S. Broadway. I picked up three SP (divisible by three) hits 1948 Bowman, and if you can overlook the little bit of vintage tape, these are really nice! They were priced at $10 each (10% NM "book") before discounts. ![]() ![]() I took this photo on my morning "power walk" in their new neighborhood in Napa California. Using my iPhone and it is not photoshopped it is SO beautiful there! ![]() Larry

I was going to say I was "chomping at the bit" to get to the Post Office this morning, but the Urban Dictionary says the correct usage is "champing at the bit"?
The USPO has been holding my mail for nearly a month, and here are the football cards that were waiting for me. The most "expensive" in this group are two of the 1948 Bowmans #26 Bob Waterfield (RC) and #36 Bulldog Turner (RC SP) each "valued" in NM at $275. Only two more cards remain until I complete my 1948 Bowman set #99 Harry Gilmer (RC SP), and #108 Buford Ray (RC SP and the last card in the set). Larry ![]() ![]()

And after the long "Presidents Day" holiday, this is what my mail carrier had for me today. A pair of hits 1950 Bowman, three hits 1952 Bowman small, 1972 Topps hi number Ron Yary, and finally 1962 Topps #17 Mike Ditka (RC). Only one card left to complete my 1962 Topps set, I still need #36 Ernie Davis (RC).
Looks like I get to spend my day playing with cardboard ![]() Larry ![]() ![]()

![]() Here's a Washington State Normal School Football Program between WWU("B") and CWU ("E"). It was the dedication game of Bellingham's Waldo Field, November 16, 1923. The players pictured are team captains Richard Bruland (WWU) and Gerald Brunson (CWU). Not much to report on these two, Brunson was killed in a workplace accident as an electrician in 1926. ![]() Last edited by pariah1107; 02-16-2016 at 01:41 PM. |

The cover and back of the program are such heavy bond paper that it almost feels like the leather of a football. It's a very odd program. The 12,000 fans that reportedly went to this game, would be more than years of attendance for either of these colleges. If I found another pre-Depression era program from CWU I'd be amazed.

The card posted by SilverBall67 and the program posted by Ty really do show the odd shape of the old footballs. Does this style of ball have a name? I can't imagine throwing that thing!
One eBay purchase arrived today. 1952 Bowman large #39 Emlen Tunnell. Of course I enjoy putting these sets together, but I know nothing about the players pictured including Emlen until I read about him on the internet. Card "books" for $125 in NM shape and I won this one for $13.33 delivered. 1. First African American to play for the NY Giants (1948) 2. Pro Football HOF 1967 the first African American inducted 3. Suffered a broken neck playing in college, so severe that he was rejected by both the Army and Navy during WWII (he did serve in the Coast Guard) 4. Undrafted out of college, he hitchhiked to New York to ask for a try out. 5. Died of a heart attack in 1975 on the football field while acting as an assistant coach with the Giants. Larry ![]() ![]()
