I don't chase graded cards, I think I probably paid no more than a regular card price for it. I'm sure lost of high graded 3D's crack in the case. I wonder if the TPG's have an official statement on that? |

1972 Topps and OPC - I'm still bummed that there is no "In Action" card.
I learned a valuable lesson on TPG's 10 years ago with the borderline scamming BCCG grading. All 8's are not created equal as has been discussed numerous times on net54 about BCCG. |

That '72 card has always bugged the heck out of me. And I don't mean because his eyes are looking weirdly off to the side instead of directly at the photog. The background is tilted at such a sharp angle that it's laughable...yet his pose looks very natural, with the bat held straight up. I would love to see the full original photograph to see what the heck was going on.

In 1972 or 1973 7/11 and perhaps other places produced plastic soft drink cups with MLB players and also Hall of Famers on them. I have a reproduction of the promo poster, but have never seen an original. They came in several distinct styles and also color contrasts. Then in in 1976 more cups were made, based upon the MLB trademark. Anyway, here are 4 different styles of the cups, plus the reproduction of the poster over the next 5 days.
Here are the 1976 MLB cups |

Some more cups..... This variety has an autograph at the base of the neck. The coloring is also different, and one is missing the 7-11 on the back.

Cups, cups and more cups...... These I believe are from 1973, except for the all white one, which is 1972 based on the biographical info on the back.

'73 7-11 Ad
Thanks for posting the '73 7-11 ad... I've never seen a real one as well. Does anyone out there have one of these? I bet they'd go for a pretty decent amount of money due to "us" single player collectors.

I cut off the bottom 2-3 inches, if you want to see that I can put it up. It says "Oh thank heaven for 7-11" with instructions on hand washing the cups, not to use dishwasher.

1973 Kellogg's, one signed, one blank back. I got the graded ones off Ebay for probably less than the grading fees. I did not get the autograph myself, it looks good. As I recall I got it at a large show in Orlando in the early 90's, sponsored by Sportsnet (I think that is correct). Anybody remember Sportsnet.com, one of the early internet sites? I know I bought 100 Tino Martinez 90 UD rookies for $2 each off them........

Gum
I have something better for that...1981 Topps Thirst Break Gum Comics. It is green gooey gum ( at least it is green and gooey warping toward brown today),wrapped with a comic depicting some sports figure..baseball, basketball, football, boxing, hockey and track. Set of 54 with 24 baseball subjects...Aaron, Ruth, Mantle, Gibson and BROCK, among them..Removing the comics from the gum of unopened packs and then cleaning them is a nightmare. I still have an unopened box and might pay money to see someone open a couple and "chew" that green to brown, slimy, gooey gum. Do you have the Brock from that set ?

1974 Topps Stamps. They came with an album which is very hard to find, and I do not have one. They are much harder to find than the 69 albums. The stamps are pretty easy but for some reason the albums are tough (Al, can you post it?)

David--they are tough for some reason. Contact Mike Mosier at Columbia City Collectibles...they have a web site...he may have some. I had a few extras that I sold through Love Of The Game auctions not long back
Edit--his web site does list one, for $ 49. I have found him flexible on pricing Last edited by ALR-bishop; 12-09-2013 at 03:36 PM. |

To end 1974 here is a recognition day pamphlet given out as Lou broke the single season stolen base record. Do you notice anything funny about the last page, the stolen base log?

Stolen Base Log
I guess a couple things:
It only goes up to 115 and he stole 118. He didn't steal first base until game #7. Correct? |
#183
|
|||
|
|||
Yes. He was on a pace to steal -0- bases through the first week, then the team underestimated him......

Moving into 1975 is this card, part of a set honoring James "Cool Papa" Bell. I have one that is apparently signed by Mr. Bell. Also interesting in a perverse sort of way is the comment by Bell about the reason the Cubs traded Lou Brock away.

The Phillies must have had the same "problem" in 1966 that the Cubs had in 1964 when they traded Fergie Jenkins and Adolfo Phillips to the Cubs. Perverse is right.

1975 Hostess single. I am not sure why the back scans shorter, it is the same card. This is cut from the 3 card panel.

My favorite Topps card is 1976 by far.
I'd have to think about the other question, I really do like the 76 and 77 advertising discs which I will be showing eventually, probably towards the end of January. They were tough to track down on some of them, impossible almost without Ebay. |

Great stuff! Since this seems to be the ultimate Brock destination, any ideas on this item? I picked it up from a sportswriter's archive that seemed to be late 1960s.

Somewhere I have a 75 Ho Ho box (according to my master list), but cannot find it, so that ends the Hostess cards (for now) Here is a 1974-75 picture pak sold at the ballpark (I think). Probably 1974, as Torre, Siebert and Foster were gone in 1975

This is one of my favorite pieces, and I'm not totally sure what it is or if 1975 is the correct date. It appears to be a display with Jay Publishing stadium issue cards. I assume 75 because Brock was on everything in 75 after breaking the stolen base record, and the Dodgers were NL champs, but anyone who could date it better, let me know.
