Flossie Oberlin pitched 227 innings . . .
. . . across four MLB seasons but could only gather 5 wins. It is interesting to note that he allowed 143 runs in his MLB career, but only 95 earned. It shows how spotty the defense was in those days, at least in Washington.

Guy Harris "Doc" White
This card is from the Tom Marsilio TTM autograph collection, which Steiner auctioned several years ago. Guy Harris "Doc" White was an amazing person. He was a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Dentistry. He was also a composer, who published several songs, including bestseller "Little Puff of Smoke, Good Night" in 1910, with co-writer Ring Lardner, who was a sportswriter in Chicago during that period. White died at age 89 in Silver Spring, Maryland, just eight months after witnessing Don Drysdale surpass his record of 45 consecutive scoreless innings on June 4, 1968. He was the last surviving member of the 1906 World Champion Chicago White Sox. In Game 5, he recorded the first save in Series history.

Gabby Street was hardly a stellar MLB player . .
. . . posting a career .278 OBP spread across 8 mostly part-time MLB seasons. Nevertheless, the "Old Sarge" had a handful of noteworthy accomplishments, including the record for the longest gap between MLB games -- 19 years. He also caught and mentored (one of) the greatest pitchers in MLB history during Walter Johnson's early years. He managed the St. Louis Cardinals to two pennants and one world championship and was Harry Caray's color man. But he is best remembered as the player who caught a fastball thrown from the top of the Washington Monument.

"On June 18, Newark was leading Buffalo 3-0, and was trying to hurry the game along with rain coming. Sporting Life reported: "In Newark's [home] half of the fourth Schlafly had a strike called on him and looked around as if in mute protest at the umpire, when Rip Vowinkel hastened to put another good one over before Schlafly was ready - which was just what Schlafly wanted. In fact, he did strike out on purpose a moment later." Newark won 3-0 in five innings, the game being called on account of rain in the sixth inning."

Next card from me is of "Death Valley" Jim Scott.
I looked up his stats and I didn't realize that he ranks 17th all-time in career ERA at 2.30.

Bridwell No Cap
On September 23, 1908, Al Bridwell, the Giants' shortstop, lined a fastball over second. McCormick scored easily from third. The Polo Grounds ushers opened the gates and let the crowd race onto the field, as they always did when the game was over. Poor Fred Merkle had no idea that he was about to change the course of history.
59 years later -- almost to the date -- Bridwell signed this tobacco cigarette card...

Mickey Doolan (fielding)
My favorite T206 action pose is Mickey Doolan's. I still need the BROAD LEAF 350 card to complete this run.
And, according to my A - B - C - D theory, a DRUM is possible; however, no DRUM has yet to be confirmed. This T206 Doolan is a strange 350-only Series subject in that it was NOT printed with certain popular T206 backs in this series, namely...... CAROLINA BRIGHTS, EPDG, OLD MILL, POLAR BEAR. . . Sweet Cap, Fact. #25 TED Z T206 Reference . |
