Default 1955 Type I photo

This is a Type I photo of Mick taken by E.F. Collins during the Yankees' tour of Japan in 1955. It's 4-by-5.

Time to get Mick back to page 1.

I missed the complete Page milk carton that was sold in a smaller auction. But I had gotten a cut out from the carton thanks to Net54 member Fred.

I also picked up this Meadow Sweet milk carton.

Hmmm, it seems the Mick had a few "favorite" milks. No wonder the FTC came down on him.

Nice pick-up at a great price. I had this in my watch list and was going to bid on it at the last second. Then I got busy and I forgot about it. Glad that someone here got it.

Back to the milk theme:

A few years ago, I picked up a pamphlet with Mantle on it for Jo-Mar dairy in Kansas (see attached). There was also a Jo-Mar milk carton with Mantle on it that I was outbid on.

Recently, I picked up another pamphlet (see attached). This one is from Med-O-Pure dairy in Ohio. I'm assuming there must be milk cartons from Med-O-Pure also, although I have not seen one.

So, two more milk cartons to add to my want list. Also, did Page dairy and Meadow Sweet dairy have pamphlets as well? Probably two more pamphlets to add to the want list.

Added to my snapshot PC and now growing player owned business snaps. Two young boys posing with a bat and glove in front of Micks Holiday Inn Sign.

Like many Mantle items, expensive. I paid more than Many hofer snaps I have. But I really like it. And It goes with 3 other players owned business shots I have.

(Not mine)

This is interesting. Not really looking at the cool early auto. But the issue itself, I've never seen it before. Definitely a photo from 1951 wearing the 50th anniversary patch. Thought it would be a cool share. I'm sure a few of you all know what it is and have one.

Lucas,

That card happens to be my avatar. I bought it from Kelly Eisenhauer, renowned in the Mickey Mantle collectible world. I think he had around 5 at one time. He said he got them from Mantle's family after he passed. They said that Mickey had the photo cards printed up so that when requested for an autograph, he could sign the photo card and give it out. Another Mantle collector on this site also bought one from Kelly. He tried to get PSA to grade it and even with Kelly supporting the authenticity of the card, they declined to grade it. They will only grade the autographs on the cards that have been signed.

Yep. That was a nice looking '51 Mantle. I bought a boyhood collection from an 80 year old friend who had opened a lot of packs back in '51, 52, and 53. He had 2 rookie Mantles and 1 Mays. The Mantles graded 3 and 3.5. I think you got the 3.5 and I sold the 3 to another dealer. If I remember correctly(possibly not), I sold it on Ebay for $6K at the time in 2019. I think you did pretty good holding onto it since then. Congrats!

Just checked VCP. Actually sold for $6500!!!

Just picked up this Type 1 Mantle.

Mantle Photo Yankees Issue 8-X-10 Ver 2 resized.jpg

I overpaid for it because I noticed it was very slightly different from one I already had.

Mantle Photo Yankees Issue 8-X-10 Ver 1 resized.jpg

I've indicated the area where I first noticed the difference within the red lines. The difference is very small, the photo appears to be shifted slightly to the left. However, there is also a slight difference in the upper left corner. It appears to be shifted to the right a little bit. Therefore, I think the new photo is simply zoomed out very slightly from the first photo.

Mantle Photo Yankees Issue front 8-X-10 Ver 1 and Ver 2 resized.jpg

Of course a normal person wouldn't care about the minute difference. But, what can I say?

Lucas— pretty amazing if true and great hobby history. I can add it to the 61 Dice, 66 Punch Out and 68 Disc as Topps Mantles I will never get my hands on .

I thought it was a fantasy piece at first as well. But then I started looking closely, the card is definitely genuine. And the skill needed to make a genuine quality card and replicate the cartoon style that perfect was impossible. Not to mention a story like this needs good provenance, and it has that as well.

Although I don't like how the owner says it would cost too much to grade. It would a drop in tbe bucket compared to what it would sell for. Then again getting an auction house to do it for them would also probably be free and a nice perk.

I was wondering what it might sell for at auction. And thought somewhere between a quarter and half a million.

Edit: did not realize there was no front pic (the front pic in the article wasn't the card in question, just a generic '60 topps front) so take back my definitely from above. Need a real picture of the front.

Picked this up recently.

Mantle 1960s Milk Meadow Sweet Cut Out resized.jpg

I'm assuming this is from a low-fat carton of Meadow Sweet milk. In Post 1853, I showed a regular carton of Meadow Sweet milk, and this Mick is the same as that, except for the color. Since the color of the Meadow Gold "cards" is based on the type of milk, green for low-fat and blue for regular, I'm assuming the same might be true for Meadow Sweet.

Picked this up at the Raleigh show last weekend. Wasn't looking for one, but it's hard to pass up a centered Mantle, especially when it's a 2 that looks like a 4.5.

The most centered 1965 I have been able to find in the past 6 months within my budget. Also the last 1960s Mantle I need for my run. Still have 1951-1954 to acquire

Picked this up from a fellow Net54er a few months ago, thanks Fred!

It was cut from an advertisement display for Dan-Dee. It has Mantle on one side and Rosen on the other.

Those Rawlings tags are great! Did any other players endorse shoes ? I collect Brooks Robinson … did he have a shoe or glove tag like those ?
Thanks Scott

I don't know about Brooks. I only collect Mickey and Brooks doesn't come up in my searches. But, I would not be surprised if there are any. If they did it for Mick, why not for the other athletes that had their own endorsed Rawlings glove? Keep looking and good luck!

I did a quick Google search and found one Brooks from the early '70s with Clemente.

Who knows? They used that same image for the 1956 team photo set. The 1956 photo (the one on the left) is slightly larger than the 1954 photo.

Just picked up another unopened Yoo-Hoo bottle with a Mantle cap. This gives me all 3 versions of the Mantle cap (that I know of) plus the screw on cap.

I am actively buying and selling vintage sports cards graded and raw. Feedback as a buyer: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=297262

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.
