Default March Pick-up Thread

I'll start it off this month. It's beat but they don't pop up too often. 1923 Lections.

Great pick up Phil. Those Lections are tough (especially ones without holes).

I picked this up over the weekend and it should arrive tomorrow. I am very excited to find this caliber of a T204 Johnson; it is a classic card and one I have been looking for for several years. But what makes this card so special to me is its provenance and story.....

I acquired the card from Tony A., who bought it 2014 from a guy who acquired a bunch of cards from an estate sale (yes a real estate find). Along with this T204 Johnson were 100+/- T204 Ramlys, as well as Colgan's, T206s, T205s, Boxing cards, etc. Below are pics of the find. The cards are in such good condition because they were kept in the boxes and tins (shown below) for 100+ years. Tony had the entire find graded by SGC and all the T204 cards were graded 5-6; if you come across a T204 graded 5-6, there is a good chance it is from this find.

Tony ended up selling it to a longtime and beloved collector named Jim B, who was diagnosed with cancer and passed away not long after he acquired the card. The family sold it at auction in 2016. It was sold again in 2018 and then sold again a few months later in a Heritage auction where Tony A re-acquired his old card. Tony is now the proud owner of a gorgeous T206 Plank, which is the only reason I was able to get this amazing card. Thanks Tony!

Wow! What a card for day 1 of the thread! Easily one of the finest examples I've ever seen. That is a card to be treasured. Congratulations

Default JimB

Reading through the thread , it was so nice to see a nice mention of our friend JimB.
What a great guy, deeply missed. Deeply.
Jim also had a great collection. Cool to see how one of his cards ended up in your epic collection, Ryan!

Well done!

That card reminds me of my Young card. It's mesmerizing ... Congrats!

There was a thread about this but it was never in the new pick up thread. So here it is (again)...circa 1878

Late mail today-

Thanks to the generosity of a long time member I was able to pick up a Unicorn for my West Coast type collection, never thought I'd get the chance to own an H998 Western Playground.
I'm grateful to be part of such a special community.

Here's a little history about the set.

Phil, you too are having a heck of a month.

Ok, I am done for the month (I think). If I cant overpay at an auction house, then I can overpay in a private transaction and get exactly what I want! Very excited to add these two, especially the Cobb, which I need for my back run

I’m new to Tobacco cards but working on Tigers T206s and HOFs in the T205 set. Had these 4 arrive yesterday.

Then a couple more T205s in the mail today. (Grabbed the Meyers because I felt like I needed Mathewson’s battery mate).

Good luck with the T206 Tiger set. I completed the set years ago, but sold them all in the last 5 years. Those Cobb’s will kill you though Lol

Great card Ryan!

Nerd moment - Neat that some of the cards were found in twin oak tins, their ad was printed on the backs of a few T206 scraps.

I just got my first 19th century card - A&G Keefe.

I don't have any reason to believe it's fake, as the eBay seller has several positive feedbacks for selling other A&Gs. There were multiple other bidders, and the final price was not unduly low - maybe 10% lower than I had expected. The print dots seem consistent with the tobacco cards I have, and it passes the black light test. But I don't have any other A&Gs to compare it with, so please let me know if anything makes you think it's fake. The stock feels quite thick and sturdy, more so than T206s for example.

One issue is that it measures 1/16" short of 1.5"x2.75" in both directions. Can A&Gs have size variations, or is this one likely trimmed? The right edge looks a little crooked/bowed in the photo, but it seems ok when I line it up against the edge of a top loader.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

One of the lowest graded pop CJs around (31 amongst BVG, PSA and SGC) only #87 Cady has a lower combined pop at 30

One of the nicest looking cards in the set. Took me a while to realize that he isn't miming batting, he is ready to pitch without a glove.

Also grabbed this at the Philly show. One of the best shows .Plenty of great pre-war and vintage. Had a hard time deciding what to buy.

One is an ill advised overbid after one too many. The other is a member pick up that I’m very happy with (thanks Phil).

Wow! You guys are like a virtual card show. We're only at March 5th. So far the pickups and the stories behind them equal any month I've looked at yet. Congratulations to all of you!

Since we're discussing Jim:

Who else would 'flat Stanley" an Anson cabinet to meet the Dalai Lama?

What struck me most about him was his humility. There are so many self-important asshats in the hobby, yet here was a guy with a collection that was plain scary awesome who flew under the radar unless he was your friend. No aggrandizement, no denigration of other collectors, just honest joy in sharing this weird obsession of ours with the rest of us freaks. He'd spark over a $1 common if it made you happy, same as over a $10,000 rarity.

I bet this thread makes him smile, wherever he is.

I still think of Jim often and miss him greatly.

This particular T204 W. Johnson will forever have ties to Jim’s legacy!

Ryan, enjoy the card my friend!

Despite the peripheral condition issues, its never a bad day to pick up an early Plank and Waddell. And a few T206s

I still cannot bring myself to delete Jim's number from my phone. The kindest heart I've ever met.

Default Big day at the Post Office

After a super slow start to the year, I had a few recent wins arrive today at the post office.

Picked up a couple more T204 catchers, Larry McLean and PJ Moran. The Patrick Moran is my first blank backed T204.

Also picked up a George Keifel batting pose T210.
