Brockelman definately has/had one world class collection. Its always possible 50 years from now we will see slabs with the "Scott Brockelman collection", or the "Lone Star State's Luckey collection" or any number of people from this board.


David McDonald....that D304 set you have going is amazing. I've never been able to decide but between the D304's and the D322's those are my favorites of all the D cards.

Been collecting pre-war since about 1998 or 1999.

Most owned at one time - maybe 125 give or take.

Own now - 95 or so. More if I count my "cards" of female players and teams.

Most significant: By value, Cobb Red PSA 4, and Goudey Ruth Red ungraded - still own both. By scarcity, E97 BW Rossman and maybe the N29 Ewing that visited me for a short time before becoming part of a trade with Toby for the Ruth.

Sets collected: not a set collector. But of my "set" of one Detroit player from each pre-1920 set, I'm well on the way with most of the mainstream candy, tobacco and M sets covered. I fill the waiting time looking for female players and team images.

Nice thread Dave. It actually got me to take 2 minutes from the tornado of work, school and winter that has been my life lately to answer!

1871 Warren Studio Cal McVey, 1887 Old Judge Gilbert/Bacon proof Gus Weyhing, 1888 Fearnaught cabinet of Deacon White (from his estate). Still own them all.

None. The closest is my "set" of Old Judge, but there's no way I'm ever coming close to completing that.

Unfortunately I probably won't have all of those cards down the road. When I started out I collected EVERYTHING, as did most collectors 10-15 years ago, even vintage non-sports. However, as prices escalated and rarites became more expensive I have taken to selling off some of the more "common" material, first it was the 1952-68 Topps and 1948-55 Bowman sets, then the prewar Non-sports H.O.W., Indian Gum, and many,many other R, N and T sets, later due to some very attractive offers some of the Minor league sets very sold as well, along with partial sets that I lost interest in, Old Judge, etc. I am a set collector by heart, seeking completeness in even the toughest of sets.

I am also happy to say that I have seen several collections which dwarf mine, a couple of which are board members. Obviously the key to all of these large complex sets was starting early on in the infancy of the hobby.

I do get great joy in seeing many of the cards I once owned proudly displayed in many posts on the board by jubilant new owners, as someone else has said we only own them for a little while.

The bulk of the T and E sets remain, as well as many nice type cards. I fear still more will be sold as I near retiring, which may be later than sooner with the crappy stock market conditions(which I think may fuel vintage card prices).

For the present the only real challenge is the continued quest for W600's as I try to put together the largest group known/and or possible.

First off, Im poor, but if you add up all the cards Ive owned Id have a nice collection and some very rare stuff.


How long?...... 28 Years, Since I was 13. Took a few years off in the mid 90s and sold 95% of them because of a high maintenance (ex)girlfriend who need to go on trips 5 times a year (Wish I didnt sell them, had dozens of E99, E100, T211, T215, T216, and a few T214, T217, etc.)

Most PreWar cards owned at one time?..... About 2,000 (+ 3,000 1948-60)

How many now?..... About 1,000-1,500 (plus many postwar)

Most significant card(s)?..... only known 1926 Holland Peckinpaugh, 1906 Ullman Matty, only known 1959 Esslinger Beer (HR Derby) Aaron, only known Wierd greenborder R309-1 Ruth thing , only known 1920 Cuban Ruth thing , only known 1933 Blue Bird Ruth sideview, and abouty 10 other ones. A few Weavers, E100, 1911 Zeenut, etc. about 8 T214's and 5 T217s. Still own a couple of these above.

Complete sets?..... (Currently) Im not a set collector, more of a type collector, I like the unusual. In the late 80's I had about 80% of the T206 set, but they bored me (too common) so dumped them, Had about 80% of the 1911 Zeenut set when you could buy them in nice shape for $15 ea. or find them in large groups at flea markets in NorCal, Had about 30 different 1938 Sawyer Biscuit cards when they sold for under $100 ea. only a few years ago., 1921 Schapira Ruth set with 2 uncut boxes, 1936 Goudey (who doesnt have this set), and a few 1940-50s sets (Remar, Signal, Smiths, Sunbeam, etc.), and many 1880s Victorian baseball related tradecards sets.
