Default What Was Your Best Pickup Of 2007?

Posted By: boxingcardman

Congrats on those acquisitions. Here are mine:

I'd have to go with the four 4 on 1 baseball/boxing Exhibits I picked up as the best item of the year. Although you gotta love an uncatalogued card that has Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby, Mickey Walker and Georges Carpentier on it, my favorite of them is the uncatalogued one with Walter Johnson, Al Simmons, Gene Tunney and Benny Leonard on it because I collect Leonard cards. You can see them here:

http://imageevent.com/exhibitman/interestingexhibitcards

Which brings me to my second favorite of the year: an uncatalogued 1924 Benny Leonard stand-up, similar in size to an E125. It can be seen on my web site under Catalog Updates:

http://www.americasgreatboxingcards.com/Catalog_Updates.html

And finally, an elusive early gum card, the E282 Oh Boy Gum Card depicting Jack Dempsey, Tom Mix and (I think) Dempsey's manager Jack Kearns. You can see it here at the bottom of the page:

Well, I am impressed by the pedigree of my Green Cobb. The E93 looks to be well traveled as well. Their inexorable journey will be stopping though, I have no plans to pass them along to new Owners just yet.

My eyes aren't great but it looks to me like Ruth in a Red Sox uni and listed with NY. What am I missing?

Thanks guys.

Harley Frederick Foto Service was located in Sacramento, California and was the official photographer for the PCL Sacramento Senators team. Aside from the Sacramento Senators, almost all of the cards depict players from the Pacific Coast League. There really isn't a great explanation for inclusion of Ruth in the PCL set other than documenting the blockbuster trade that took place at the end of 1919.

I've always wanted a Turkey Red, finally got one at the Boston show a few months ago.

I've been looking for Schalk's RC for 2 years. I bought a GAI and cracked it out and submitted to PSA.

Dan P,

That is an absolutely great, great looking 1. And I think Speaker is one of the best looking T3's. Nice card.

Thanks Joann.

I wasn't looking to spend a lot of $$. Besides the pin hole (which is hard to notice unless you look at the card on the correct angle) the card looks great.

Great Looking Cards.

2007 has been very good to me. I've added several neat cabinets that are strong contendors but my single favorite card would probably be this N172 Lady Baldwin. It's not the most valuable but a nice pose of perhaps my favorite player.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Well Dan,how about 3-separate buys of 1952 topps sets? With Mantles grading as low as 5 as high as gai 6.5.
We bought so many really good collections this year its hard to say.

Also came across 6-total 1954 bowman Ted WILLIAMS'and had only bought two in the past 7 years previous.

My best pickup this year wasn't really a card, but rather finding this site.
It has been a great source of information and inspiration as I took up collecting again to start the year. My modest pre-war collection is growing!

Best wishes to all of you for a safe and happy holiday season and thanks for answering dumb questions when I ask them and not-so-dumb questions when I ask them.

Shawn

PS...extra thanks to Frank Wakefield and Paul Stratton for the series 6 T210s...those have probably been my favorite pickups this year!

I've picked up some fun OJs this year but I think the card I like the best the 16Z Claxton. I've wanted that card for a long time. I waited too long and the price just escalated. I still paid a yard for the thing but I'm happy to have found one.

Has to be David MacDonald's gift to me of the M116 Smokey Joe Wood which completed my set.
Thanks again David and have a Happy Holidays down in the islands.
