Default Mastro - Anyone win??

Posted By: Aaron M.

One other bit of good news, Tbob, is that Mastro will be holding its first "Classic Collectibles" auction in October. This auction is specifically aimed at us shallow pockets-types (e.g., the average collector), with much less valuable and expensive lots.

I would imagine this auction will offer single cards or smaller lots of cards, that would usually appear in much larger (and more expensive) lots in the typical Mastro auction. They will also likely offer lower grades of cards that are more affordable to the normal collector.

Does that mean that consigners for this next Mastro auction are going to get the shaft?

Maybe Mastro will waive the 15% seller's commission for this auction, since they are kind of billing it as a "not so spectacular" event??

If they WILL ... then I have a LOT of stuff that I would love to send them and let them sell.

I wonder if there is some ceiling on item value for this "small" auction?

I paid about $12k for the 1868 Chadwick book of Baseball in the REA auction ... but have since obtained a better copy and would like to sell this one. Too big?

I don't believe they are lowering their fees (on either end).

Hal, I think your item is too "high-end" for their Classics auction. It looks as though they will offer items that are more commonly offered on E-Bay than one of the major auction houses. Besides, you've already missed the consignment deadline (was August 6).

I would just send it to them for their regular December auction (consignment deadline is October 1). Even after the sellers fees, I think you would probably stand the best chance of making your money back on Mastro.

Hal--That is an item that I'm sure would fit well in the major Mastro auctions. The next one, I believe, is in December and I'm sure they are taking consignments now.

in the old online Mastronet auctions when they first got going. Got some stuff pretty reasonably back then. Bought 100-200 Goudeys and some large lots that I broke up and sold. I'm sure they won't offer the same type of bargains or the bidding will be much more 'spirited' than in those days..........I think a lot of people didn't really know about how they were doing those auctions back then.

Their costs for that type of auction are SIGNIFICANTLY lower since they aren't going to produce any print versions of the catalogs. Seems like they'd at least drop the seller's side to a more manageable amount. I can't remember how much they were charging on those old auctions but I was thinking it was either free (gasp......) or 10% or so.
