Topps had them in the 1960s (earlier?) but Upper Deck ruined the hobby with them in I think 1989.

I can stomach him in limited doses, but his unwavering love for ultra-modern cards keeps me from watching 95% of his videos. He has a somewhat magnetic personality and exudes hobby positivity, but I agree that his investment advice is awful, bordering on appalling.

He's a decent interviewer, and did put out a small series of 3-4 videos, when visiting Marshall Fogel's house. I enjoyed seeing many of Fogel's killer cards and his awesome memorabilia. But this was an anomaly, as the vast majority of his content dwells on modern chase cards with contrived or "manufactured" rarity.

The substance of his content is laughable garbage but the delivery is upbeat and watchable. I'm not interested in the cards he buys but when I wanted to see video from the floor of a show to get a feel of how it was, his was one of the more watchable productions. It is quite removed from the obnoxious card bros having loud conniption fits over every piece of shiny crapola they buy.

I think there is a lot to learn from his presentations about how the young audience for ultramodern cards approaches things, even if it is seemingly antithetical to everything good and wholesome about the hobby from our perspective. Like Green Day says, you gotta know your enemy.

I don't know anything about Geoff and I don't track the "shiny" stuff he seems to collect, but I've been more interested in these kids he's trading cards with. They all seem to come up with these hard sided cases of new PSA10 cards supposedly worth thousands and thousands of dollars. Who are these kids and how do they have that kind of collection at that age? Many of them can't even drive yet. Do you think these kids are real customers or is it like many of the "customers" on Pawn Stars? Are they just prearranged trades designed for the cameras?

Chase cards go back to at least 1889 with Spaulding & Merrick. Card number 20 in their N384/N386 series of actresses and pugilists is probably a chase card that does not survive, and it definitely is an intentional chase card for their N385 series of animals. If all 24 animals were turned in, the smoker received a watch as advertised on the backs.

They may go back further, but is the first intended chase card I am aware of off the top.
