Thanks for the info, Adam.
Happy Jackie Robinson Day. Here Jackie is the welcoming committee for the first black pitcher, Dan Bankhead. ![]() In 1947, after Jackie Robinson had broken Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Dodgers’ General Manager Branch Rickey needed to find more pitching talent for Brooklyn to make a push for the pennant. Eventually, Rickey and his scouts decided on the red-hot right hander from Memphis. In the end, the Dodgers paid $15,000 to sign Bankhead. The Alabama Tribune reported on the signing with a story titled “Red Sox Ace First Hurler in ‘Majors.’” In the story, the Tribune reported: “Bankhead while under close scrutiny by the eagle-eyed Rickey and his veteran scout, George Sisler, last Friday night at Martin Stadium gave impressive account of himself as he struck out eleven batters to win over the Birmingham Black Barons 7 to 2. He has struck out 113 batters in 109 innings.” Bankhead soon found himself in New York, as a teammate and roommate of Jackie Robinson, and the first African American pitcher to pitch in the Major Leagues. He made his debut on August 26, 1947 at Ebbets Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his debut, Bankhead struggled. He gave up ten hits and eight runs in three and one third innings. The Dodgers went on to lose 16-3. In fact, Bankhead batted much better than he pitched, hitting a homerun in his first appearance. The Daily News the following day ran the headline, “Pirates Overwhelm Flock, 16-3 Bankhead Routed, Hits HR.” The story also said, “Bankhead entered to the accompaniment of a standing ovation.” Source: tnmuseum.org/Stories/posts/dan-bankhead

I am slowly building up a collection. I have two I'm interested in obtaining next: 1954 Topps, and the exhibit. Others who have the the Topps Doubleheader, that is fantastic!

I'd posted images of this photo card of Jackie Robinson once or twice before on this board, and asked if anyone knew anything about it, as I have not been able to find any information on this issue. I haven't received any feedback so I'm posting again in hopes that someone might know something about it's origins. It has a blank back but with writing on it that I attribute to the previous owner.

So have you ever tried to have your card graded? Mine would likely come back as Fair or worse, but yours is spectacular! |

I never have; I am not sure which TPG would accept these. Anyhow, I'm not a grading guy unless I am trying to sell. Just looks better in a mylar sleeve in my Jackie Robinson album (well, a few pages of an album). But if you get one of them to slab yours, please let me know. Any Jackie is a good one, even a beater, and I should know:

Picked up over the weekend. Curious if anything is on the back of the photo that would date it. The write up on back is quite interesting also.

Got this nice photo today. Pose used on a lot of modern cards. Scorecard is falling apart but still fun.

Just found this thread. I'll try to post one per day for the next couple of weeks.
This particular pennant is the only only one known. Please excuse the reflection. Great subject! |

My royal flush of R423 Jackies in all 4 colors (and numbers). Took three subs with SGC get all the colors on the labels. PSA has since updated the name and year to the more correct 1952 Oak R423 (as the photo was taken by Berk Ross and Oak Sales was the strip card manufacturer). Universal pop all grades and colors about 12. The "1" will remain as a part of my Jackie run of all SGC 1s, but the others may go at some point.

Jackie's last career hit. A game winner! Wire photo and press pass.
![]() ![]() In a 10-inning scoreless pitching duel with both starters going all the way, Jackie Robinson's walk-off single to left in the bottom of the 10th won the game for Clem Labine and kept the Dodgers' championship hopes alive. Tough-luck loser Bob Turley gave up a 10th-inning walk to Jim Gilliam, a sacrifice bunt by Pee Wee Reese and intentional pass to Duke Snider before the decisive hit by Jackie Robinson. It was Jackie's final hit in his career. Game 6 is one of only three games in World Series history to be scoreless through nine innings, the others being Game 2 in 1913 and Game 7 in 1991.
