I am a sales director for a big CPG company and run the eastern half of the country. I spend most days chasing down trucks and getting yelled at for late deliveries and trying to negotiate with ever increasing in power retailers.
But we are an official sponsor of MLB and I got to go to opening day, the all-star game, the ALCS, and if the Yankees would have won, the World Series. I play a lot of golf in the summer time and travel about 45 weeks out of the year so it could be worse.

Retired mathematical statistician (as opposed to pie graphs) from a National Laboratory. An example of a relation to baseball was a letter to the editor of Sports Collectors Digest from a reader who had noted (somewhat surprisingly) that in the set of over 800 Topps and over 800 Donruss for a year (I believe in the eighties) there were exactly two matches. One was Tom Tresh and I forget the other. That is, Tom Tresh had the same number in both sets. He expressed his surprise and astonishment and wrote that this must be a very unusual event. It is actually not unusual but an example of a famous 18th century French gambling game where the house lays out a deck of 52 cards, and the player lays out his randomly shuffled deck of 52 cards and wins if he scores at least one match. The readers observation is complicated because the Topps and Donruss sets are of different sizes, but there is a large overlap of players and managers. I solved the problem for the unequal sizes and for three sets of cards. It is not obvious, but the exact solution is the sum of an alternating finite series depending upon the number of cards. It is surprisingly interesting (at least to me) that this sum converges rapidly so that after eight terms the answer doesn't change to the fifth decimal place whether you have a deck of eight cards or eight million cards.

I work in TV / Internet engineering for a big company. I travel a lot since I somehow got promoted a few times over the years.
But, I want to be hired full-time by a company as interesting as the one Kevin shows above. I do some of those activities on Saturday or Sunday , but how cool would it be to do it Monday through Friday!

I'd encourage her to work on the interpersonal, group work, and social skill sets. She may not need the "practice" and just prefers to work solo......however, the computational element of what actuaries do is less and less material to the role. Machines compute the answer (used to need actuaries for that), so the differentiator is, for example, articulating a complex calculation simply to a layperson. Just my $0.02 - no change required! |

Pretty cool seeing the different paths each of us are on. I currently work for a large fleet management company. Locate, negotiate and ensure service providers meet legal requirements nationally, and internationally, that can primarily perform onsite preventive maintenance and emergency repairs for diesel/gas vehicles, forklifts, cranes, trailers and associated. Locate in shop providers as well. Been in the sourcing field since I left the Navy in '95.

I'm a corporate bankruptcy/restructuring attorney (chlankf, if you ever need new counsel, or counsel in NY/NJ, shoot me a message!). I'm not surprised to see several other attorneys among the board's members, but the range of careers and backgrounds represented here is really amazing.
I found this board after many years away from the hobby as I was hatching a plan to put together a set of playing career-era cards of each of the first five HOFers, something I could only have dreamed of doing as a kid. I don't know how often I'll post, but I love reading the discussions here and learning about the old sets and everyone else's collections. |
