As with many other national and international AH's they charge sales tax to more than just NY, so you may want to check to see how that affects you as well. Sometimes you will pay the sales tax either way.

last auction I had my niece who's attending college in NYC pick up for me and ship to CA. Didn't pay tax or the outrageous shipping charges. Hoping to do the same this time around.

I told them I was a CA resident and that I would be picking up the items. They sent me both a credit card auth form and another that allowed my niece to pick up the items. She shipped them to me at a fraction of a fraction of the price they wanted to charge. Btw I just looked at my shipping charge and they want $1471 this time around! insane

After getting blown out of the water for a couple other items, I fell in love with both of these Old Timers' Game panorama's. So many great players together from different eras including Cobb, Speaker, Young, Bresnahan, Hooper, Baker, Collins! Are you kidding me?! Plus both are framed which is about $1000-$1500 each. Can't wait to hang em up! Also won these Ruth photos. I plan on keeping the spring training photos but selling the rest. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Kevin,
I dealt with Kershelle at the UPS store. Unfortunately, with your situation it would be cheaper for them to ship to you directly and save the $115 not paying sales tax. I completely understand the high shipping cost when dealing with priceless pieces of art but to charge $147 which doesn't even include insurance to ship a 1911 Chicago Cubs season pass which is the size of a credit card is crazy. It could be shipped in the most protective way possible and sent overnight with insurance for a 1/4 of the price they were charging me. |

Its such a racket! When I talked to them they couldn't give me a answer why shipping is so high. hahaha.. Im more inclined to paying the higher amount in NY taxes to go to the state over giving this auction house any more of my money. Now we are getting into a principle matter for me haha |

I was thrilled add this postcard size snapshot of Matty during Spring Training in Texas!
Christies Matty.jpg I also added to my Bender collection with this photo from one of the Paul Thompson lots. The one on the left is the Christies image, the one on the right the Lelands image of the exact same photo from a decade ago. I noticed this image quality discrepancy on the other photos in my lot and in several other lots. As a buyer I didn't mind so much as it might have suppressed the bids of others, but as a the consignor I would not be so thrilled! Christies-Bender.jpg Christies-Bender-Lelands.jpg I bought my Thompson lot for the Bender, so if anyone is interested in the Chance, Marquard, Vance or Cicotte from that lot PM with your interest. |

I imagine mot of the people here who bought have had their eyes on the auction since it was listed, since there were some pretty amazing pieces in it. That said, I know that I took a second look based on realizing that some lots were listed pretty poorly and only decided to bid in the last few hours.

Craig, I noticed both Jackson items being relisted as well and when I spoke to a rep at Christies they said a bidder reneged on those items. This is why I question a week ago about how Christies determines what kind of budget to allow bidders. Ben, love the La Azura Photo and let me know when you are done with it! Thank you for sharing where that image came from because I knew it look familiar and couldn't think where I've seen it before. Now I know. I'm curious who I got in a bidding war with over the 1910 Cobb in Cuba postcard? I'm glad to see other "crazed bidders" out there like me. I don't think you could go wrong with any lot from that auction as many of those items belong in a museum.

David I was also in on that Speaker photo and was going to add it to the one I got during last auction. If you ever want to part with it let me know! I also loved the stand alone Cobb photo with the amazing clarity. Think it went for $3k? It was sweet! Anyone here win it?

Nice job, AJ. The 1930 panoramic photo was taken at an Old Timer's Day sponsored by the Boston Post. Proceeds benefited the Children's Hospital of Boston and also went toward a pension fund that Ban Johnson tried to establish, and it celebrated the 1903 Red Sox team.
A few auctions ago I sold a large-format autographed piece that was presented to Lou Criger (who was ill and couldn't make the game), along with another copy of this photo. I believe that the photos were made for the players and other people associated with the game. The consignor of this collection also had a bat from the game that sold in the last auction - it was an Eddie Collins bat that was signed by something like 51 people from the game. The bat was used by JIMMY Collins to get the game's first hit. Once I saw this poster I wondered if perhaps it was the copy given to Eddie or Jimmy. In any event, great pickup; I was an underbidder! -Al |

Also, Christies gave no guarantee on time periods or the way in which the photos were developed(everything sold as is) so I believe that potentially hurt some of the pieces. I know for sure that they had issues with the last auction(things not original including a 1917 white sox photo/example). I wonder if some reneged items actually means "not what I thought it was". 4 and 5 figures was just too much for me(for example) to risk. I think just like the last auction, you will have very very happy people and some that are disappointed once they receive their items. I took the conservative approach with guaranteed happiness. ![]() There are a lot Net54 guys that bought in Christies for good reason. Photos have been promoted here for a long time by long time collectors and dealers so there is a good pool here. There are not a lot of other places to talk photos in depth in large numbers. I am happy to see so many great items go to members. Again... that Joe Wood though..damn... If it didn't go to such a good home I would be very disappointed. ![]()

Photos are exploding! PSA holders are butt ugly! Someone come up with an authentication service with a vintage frame looking holder, that actually adds to the photo not subtracts. Rhys? Tom C? Ben?
