Picked up my first Ty Cobb item - a 1923 Our Boys magazine with Ty Cobb on the cover! This was a sales magazine to encourage youth to sell other magazines from the Curtis Publishing catalog, including Country Gentleman, Ladies Home Journal, and The Saturday Evening Post, to name a few. Looks like Cobb really liked the outfit, given his testimonial (no doubt paid for), and given that he encouraged his own son to sell magazines too!

Vandy circa 1939 D & M endorsed baseball and original box pickup on eBay. I've been searching for one of these guys & it's been pretty elusive...
Finding it with the box was a definite bonus.

There was a man cleaning out storage unit and found it in the back.I found the Mickey rivers bat and the Met piece on the same page in the November pickups at an antique store.the woman said one of the dealers had the elephant on ebay and I was able to get him to pull it down and made him an offer and got it from him. I couldn't believe it. It's fantastic.

That elephant is very cool!!! Although it would probably be a cardinal sin, I'd be tempted to strip that paint.

The elephant is absolutely amazing! And I would not do a thing to change it. When you're 104 years old you are not supposed to look new!

I'm a dissenter it would appear, I would have it restored, bet it would look amazing. Now he kind of looks like the Philadelphia Dalmations. Very cool item!

But what if you found a nice lead-based can of white paint from the early 1900's? : ) jk!!!

Kevin that probably is lead paint so you might want to restore it for safety reasons, don't let your dog start licking it.

I actually could see going either way on this type of item, I know some say never touch, which is true will turn off some, others will appreciate a nice restored piece....and the value goes up 3X.

looks like there is a program from that event, sold at Hunt's in 2009, you might want to keep an eye out for it as a nice complimentary piece to yours, thanks to Hunts poor pix can't really read much on it. Might tell you a little more on the event itself.

Great piece Kevin!

I have the original Invitation to the event... But I ain't sellin' it!

The following year, the Philly A's had an equally nifty door prize... A miniature white leather glove with graphics to commemorate the event. Made of the highest quality soft white leather, it's a neat piece along the lines of a Salesman's sample glove... and is perhaps even rarer than the Elephant.

I have Forum Member, Keith J to thank for mine.

Will post pics, if I can ever get fully moved and unpacked!

Just because you happened to find (an ill-informed) buyer that time, Paul, doesn't prove your "3x" thesis. Any antique dealer/appraiser will tell you that once you've removed an artifact's original-with-age patina, you've killed it value-wise.

How do you know the buyer was ill-informed? Did the auction description omit the cleaning and removal of paint from the trophy?

"Killed?" I don't think so. Maybe in your eyes, but not everyone's. I think you talking coins, yes don't clean,restore those, but there are numerous examples I can throw out there of vintage items being restored, take a look at several collectors who purchase old stadium seats that look like hell and have them restored, repainted etc., and they increase their selling value by doing so.

To restore or not depends on the item...in the case of this Pachyderm, I wouldn't touch it. looks great as is IMO.

If a museum had a choice of 2 of the exact same 100 year old items and could only have one of this item and one was nicely restored and the other was in its original condition (with some wear to it, not new original condition) which would they choose? I think they would rather have the unrestored one in my opinion.

Yeah. Says Rick's Vegas "experts." I don't think using "Pawn Stars" to verify your claims adds much to your argument. (Just because it's called "reality TV" doesn't make it so.)
