I picked this up at last year's National in Chicago and it's still one of my favorites of 2013. This is an exceedingly rare pennant of Johnny Vander Meer circa 1938. My thought is that it was perhaps sold at the All Star Game in Cincinnati.

I'm not a huge pennant guy in my own collection, but I do love to look at them.

Hey, Scott - it would be cool if you could somehow prove your ASG hypothesis (e.g. find a photo match). What dimensions are that pennant? It looks like the proportions are a bit different than most pennants

That is a nice pennant and a tougher style. Generally you would think that a simple style like this would be 1940's, but I would lean late 50's to early 1960's because of the style and some similar I have seen in the past. I think they were a premium of some kind, although I can't recall. Just my opinion though and maybe others can provide more detail. Jason

It's a surprisingly rare one, and I agree with mid to late '50s.

It is not common, so there is some mystery around it. There is a 3/4 size (typically burgundy felt) and this full size version (I've only seen the blue).

Both are equally tough, but not impossible. I remember it taking me about 2 years to track down one of these, but a few have surfaced since then.

That doesn't add much insight here, but hope this helps a bit!

Often when I sell a pennant, the buyer will be anal about specifying how I pack. Now I understand why.

Beautiful pennants, guys! Many times I have thought about buying a few baseball/football pennants from 50s and 60s. I really like the colors and logos! I remember being at the 2015 National and feeling blown away by some I saw for sale. Space to display or lack thereof has stopped me thus far. Do you all display all of yours or store them in some way?

The Reds and Giants pennants are attractive. I can see why you like them. I will be looking for St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Chargers when I start my pennant purchases. When it comes to pennants from say the '40s to the '60s, how picky are you guys regarding condition? Do you avoid pinholes, or are they acceptable? I realize large holes, rips, missing tips should be avoided when possible, but how fine do you generally get?

Pin holes are acceptable and almost unavoidable in pennant collecting. As long as the holes aren't elongated or so numerous at the tip that it has practically disintegrated they are ok. There are pennants without them, but I would not pass up an otherwise nice pennant due to some small pin holes. Stains (large or obvious) and trimmed pennants are my personal no-no's with regard to pennant purchases.

I feel about the same as Mike regarding condition. If the pinhole has extended (torn) all the way to the pennant's border, thus causing a slit, I am out.

The other deal-killer for me is ink writing on the pennant. I can't tell you how many more I would've bought, if not for some ink notation or former owners name written on the front. My eye is immediately drawn to that, rather than to the pennant itself.

I can forgive writing on the back side, and pinholes are never an issue.... your searches would become nearly impossible if you can't look past those!

This is a 1900-1910's pennant. Common from this era to have three tassels made from silky ribbon and the oversized size. I don't believe this is spots related. Value? It depends on what it relates to

After some delay, I finally decided to frame my SF Seals Pennant. It is very large (with very long tassels) and it was difficult to find an appropriate backing that came in a large enough sheet. I liked the suede backing used in the Giants pennant (framed by a fellow board member before I bought it), but there were not many colors to choose from for such a large pennant. I decided on green for grass. I think it looks good. I took it to a shop to be framed and received an estimate of $800+, so I decided to build it online and ended up paying only about $160, even with UV protected non-glare etc... (although I had to get the suede backing elsewhere).

Just for Rob, I've also attached an image of a recent pick up that says Candlestick Park on it and is orange and black (it just is not baseball, and not a pennant).

Here's my Jets pennant. I bought this off eBay a couple years back for next to nothing. I see this pennant goes for more now. I assume I got it cheap because of the bend near the tip. Is there anyway to fix that?

I bought this because it had Shea Stadium on the pennant. I don't see many Jets items with Shea mentioned. Because of the NFL Logo, I assune this is a 70s piece. Not sure of the year. Any ideas? I also wonder if its missing any pieces.

Looks like it never had tassels. Condition looks great... and the bend is not a big deal, but it can easily be ironed out if it bothers you.

Very easy process... just iron with some mild steam from the reverse side. DO NOT iron the front side. Use a medium heat setting and keep the iron moving. Do not leave the iron in one spot for more than a couple of seconds.

This crease should come out with very little effort. Again...

Do NOT iron the front side
Do NOT use high heat
DO keep the iron moving

Best of luck.... this one is easy in the scheme of things

I posted some after photos a couple pages back. In terms of cleaning up and whiteness it came out great. But the material feels somewhat thinner now and that has me rethinking trying any other "AFL" pennants. Maybe I need to dilute the bleach some.

As for the Namath...I'm not sure if I should remove the spine and bleach it separately, or leave it on and try to block with painters tape. That would be less hassle, but way more risk.

Mark, I found the same pics when i was originally was researching the pennant. The fact that no residual glue/paper is in the box should of been another clue that the Aaron side was recycled.

Really was hoping for at least a Lutzke LOL. Fun way to value something!
