As long as there are no major creases through the face and the name is legible a beater is fine for my collection. One of my prizes that was once buttoned and shellaced into a scrapbook: |

as a tribute as well. Such as the backs of Buck Barker's OJ's or some of the Exhibits or Zeenuts with exhaustive statistics on them. I prefer the written 'tribute' to be on the BACK of the card though.......... |

Pulled from a pack of 1955 Bowman I ripped open in 1991. I have taken great care to make sure the gum has remained intact for the last 15 years. |

In my ongoing hunt for beaters, I tend to look for cards that have been visibly well-loved by a previous owner, giving them personalities of their own. Creases and well rounded corners are virtually a must. Some sort of meaninful writing (stats, team changes, etc) are a definite plus as well. Extreme trimming is ok, as long is it was accidental and/or obviously done without the intent to deceive. Food stains, paper loss, mold, and other deformities of this sort are all badges of honor in the beater world. |

Jason, I don't remember. It's an umpire card; I keep it in a cabinet with the part of my collection that's not in "heavy rotation" that's currently blocked by boxes of other stuff. So I can't get to it. I want to say Hank Soar. Does that make sense? |

I'm of the same school as Ben. I enjoy creases and paperloss, banged up corners and just ugly cards. I prefer to be able to see the image fairly well and not have too much paperloss of the front, but the back is much less important to me. |

My collecting beliefs are right in line with the post above me. I love lowgrade cards. I love when a card has rounded corners, maybe a few creases, etc. It shows the card was well loved, probably by some kid back when it was issued. I usually don't buy cards that have damage to the players face, though. That is the most important part of the card to me and i'd like to have that all intact. Below is one of my favorites. It smells of mold and looks to have once been chewed by a dog. I bought it from Steve Verkman at the national and couldn't have been happier with the card and the price. He has probably five more right now in his auction, all of which are in the same type of condition. |

Does running a card through a wash cycle count as "cleaning" a card? Zach, do you plan to try to deceive one of the grading services by not disclosing this fact to them? I think you should just request the AUTH label up front rather than try to pass this "cleaned" card through the grading process. |

I like beaters. They have character and they were well loved year and years ago. When i see a mint condition t206 on ebay for example, it just looks like a reprint and i don't has a desire to own it. |

it's nice if most of the players name is on the card. Or at least on parts of the card that have been taped back together. |

I simply want to be able to recognize the player, the card set, and any identifying characteristics, such as English only or French/English backs on the 33 WWGs. Other than that, I'd rather have a hole in my card than a hole in my binder. |

Ahhh..so THAT is the reason Jay was keeping his powder dry: he believes that his now world-famous card is NOT a beater. At least send it in to PRO and get a 5 for it.... |
