Trading-Card Mania Inspires New Reality-TV Show From Maker of ‘Pawn Stars’

The series would profile Ken Goldin and his sports-memorabilia auction house, which has seen demand explode during the pandemic

By Lucas Shaw
May 6, 2021, 2:30 PM CDT

The market for trading cards and other sports memorabilia, which boomed during the pandemic, is now getting the reality-TV treatment.

Brent Montgomery, the producer behind “Pawn Stars,” and Connor Schell, formerly of ESPN, are teaming up to make a show about trading-card impresario Ken Goldin and his company, Goldin Auctions. They’ve met with several streaming services and TV networks about the project, according to people familiar with the situation.

Interest in trading cards has skyrocketed over the past couple of years, fueled by younger people with spare cash treating cards like stocks or bonds. They buy cards of younger players they like, in the hopes that the value will increase as that athlete excels. Goldin’s company has emerged as the leading auction house in the industry. It has already sold more than $150 million worth of merchandise this year, and is in the early stages of a new auction that Goldin believes will generate an additional $50 million or more.

Goldin is the kind of outsized personality designed for reality TV. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of sports and memorabilia, and already goes live on Instagram several days a week to open new packs of cards. The proposed reality-TV show has become the subject of a bidding war, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

Montgomery made a fortune with “Pawn Stars,” which chronicled a quirky family-run pawn shop a couple of miles off the Las Vegas Strip. The success of that show enabled him to sell a majority stake in his company, Leftfield Pictures, to British broadcaster ITV Plc for $360 million.

Montgomery now runs a company called Wheelhouse, which produces shows and invests in media and commerce companies. For help with trading cards, he turned to Schell, who worked on the “30 for 30” documentary series at Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN. Schell left ESPN last year to start his own production company with financing from the Chernin Group.

The Chernin Group has its own connection to Goldin. It agreed to acquire a controlling stake in the auction house earlier this year.

I'd rather see Don West return to TV.

He used to crack me up!

I still catch some old stuff on YouTube just for the laughs.

------

And when Ken would be on the show, either on the phone or in person, all I cold do was shake my head and wonder why?

Ugh...not more programming in the vein of Pawn Stars. The format is so contrived and worn out.

This has NOTHING to do with Pawn Stars
Did everyone here like “ Last Dance”? well that is our producer.
Just happens that the creator of Pawn Stars is our production company.
The show will be about the high value cards in the hobby, Undiscovered treasures, The rare finds, athlete collections, the lottery ticket aspect of someone pulling a $4 million card from a $6 pack .( like lot 3 in Goldin Elite), visits to hobby shops, etc, and eveything that goes in in a business that grew from $800k in 2012 to $27 million in 2019 and on a pace to exceed $400 million this year. If you love cards you will love it. Very positive for the hobby

So basicly the shows not geared towards the average collector since you said its more for high end card value cards and athlete collections so us little guys are pretty much watching the show about cards will never own. How exciting.

Care for him personally or not, I believe Ken has attracted many new buyers into the hobby and has been a positive force behind the phenomenal rise in values over the past couple of years. He is a modern day P.T. Barnum of the sports card industry. Alan Rosen, RIP, is the only one I can compare him to.

Is the show going to discuss how the card doctors are creating high value cards?? Maybe show an example or two?? Are the producers going to talk about the Blowout Forum?

I highly doubt that this show will last very long.

these "reality" shows are highly scripted.

That would be a show I would watch. Sounds more like a Frontline or American Greed episode though.

Wow... the negativity here is brutal. Any opportunity to drive more exposure and excitement for cards is a great thing in my view and will only help drive the growth of our hobby long-term... something which we all benefit from.

I agree with this. I would also like to see a few minutes showing the 100s of millions of dollars of altered cards in (now fraudulent) numerical holders. Transparency at its best. I would definitely watch that show.

Peckinpaugh thinks so too!

Yeh, the card industry is great, it has knocked out the average collector, and all the catalogs I get have PSA 9 and 10's which I can't afford. It's no fun anymore if you can't add to your collection. My collection has been put on hold since the prices are "off the wall". Yes my collection has gained in value, but who cares, if you can't collect anymore to add to it. Now I look at every card and wonder if it has been altered etc.

Brentsy could offer live weekly seminars on various "restoration" techniques like recoloring, trimming, chemical whitening, and the like. And a two-hour special on "market pushing." Asset management, as it were. I'd find that more interesting than watching Kenny, honestly.

That would only be offered as a PPV option.

This thread reminds me of the show roast. If only Don Rickles was still with us. Agreed any kind of positive hobby exposure is good. Look at the show Pickers and storage wars. It’s all about the enticiapation of striking it rich with a “find”.

Exposure isn’t good for collectors if it drives up prices even further. There are a lot of people in this hobby for the joy of collecting, not for monetary gain. There are a lot guys already at the point where they’d have to sell something in order to afford something else and that’s not a fun place to be.

It's the new reality...most of us can't afford every card we want. In a way it kinda sucks...but in reality this is the way most hobbies are. Only those with the greatest means can have it all?

But the great thing about sportscards is that there is such a wide range of prices and cards that it's possible for almost anyone to collect at some point on the spectrum.

Yes, you can shift focus, but being forced to still sucks.

I had shifted to buying the stale, rock hard gum that used to be included in the packs. But after breaking a tooth, I had to exit the hobby completely.

I'm looking forward to the episode where investors in an AH buy Jordan rookies from the AH for eye-catching, publicity worthy sums— and then the card subsequently proceeds to struggle to garner half that record sum. Or did that episode already air?

Hmmm.. those first sales sound a bit incestuous.

Default Let's Wait and See

I'm of the opinion that it is only fair to wait and see. Yes, when you listen to that Don West youtube segment posted earlier you can't help but think of Mr. Goldin as a huckster. But people mature, change and evolve.
IF the show actually gets on the air it comes with a huge responsibility. The news release doesn't make it clear what the show will be like on a regular basis. Here's my biggest concern. I've read a couple of "behind the scenes" articles about reality shows. One point that comes up is the producers wanting to interject what I will call "false conflict" to keep people watching.
I just hope that if the producers sit down with Mr. Goldin and ask him to say or do something that he knows is downright unethical that he has the intestinal fortitude to say, "No. I won't go there. That is wrong and not what the hobby is all about." I am sure he will be asked to cross a line. How he reacts in these producer meetings (that we will never see) will be critical. I think it's fair to say we've all been tested at some point in our lives when it comes to our personal ethics. I can only hope that Mr. Goldin doesn't let the hobby down. We shall see.

Default Goldin show

I am looking forward to it. I hope the emphasis will be on the classic cards rather than all the created rarities recently. Anything that helps the hobby stay popular is fine with me. If it promotes Goldin and it will, that is fine. We are part of a wonderful hobby, investment, or whatever else you want to call it.

It is May 9th.

I just received an automated email from Goldin Auction to notify me on my bidding status for their "April Premium Card Auction" ending April 24th.

And most of the times I attempt to view their multi-card lots, their website freezes on both my iPhone & laptop.

Maybe Ken should get his ass off of TV and fix his damn computer issues.

This may also be good to drive more interest into the hobby and help expand the number of interested people and help the value of our collections.

I don't critique a show before I've seen it. A restauranteur questioned the reliability of Yelp when he got a negative review a week before it opened (He assumed it was a competitor).

I assume the show is for entertainment purposes, and there's nothing wrong in and of itself with that.
