I'm really into putting things into the binders these days. I really want to be able to open it up and look at the cards from time to time. Does anyone have strong feelings on laying the binders flat or up, vertically like on a book shelf?

I’ve heard it’s best to store the binder with the ring at the top so the pages are dangling. That supposedly prevents damage to the cards closest to the ring. But I don’t know how true or necessary that is.

This is how I store my binders. Hanging from the spines so that the pages hang down with the force away from the rings. It also lets me lock the file cabinet with the binders safely inside.

If you place a binder on a shelf vertically, as you would a book, there is a risk that the weight of the pages will pull the back end down with binder opening up slightly and the pages contacting the shelf, leading to curling at the bottom of the pages -- and possibly the cards in the bottom slots. You can counter this by ensuring the front and back covers are tightly pressed against the pages or by using binder slip cases. The binder and slip case combinations sold by archival storage companies are very nice but also pricey. However, considering the value of what they're protecting, you might find them to be worth it.

I agree that binders can be a little scary with the sagging, so I had these binders custom made. The pages fit toploaders so even if the pages themselves sag, the card are protected. I built this storage unit for the binders that fits them snugly, so they don't sag either way.

Nice - who made the binders? They look like the same concept as these - https://toploaderbinder.com - but were they less expensive ($100 for 2 binders/80 pages)?

Thanks, guys. I’m really happy with them. I actually used the pages from this company. I wanted nicer binders than they had though, so I contacted a leather binder company and had them make me these. They were expensive as far as binders go, but storage and presentation are important to me, so it was worth it.

Love the setup, Conor. Looks great.

But WHY did you have to do this to me? After seeing your setup I clearly need those sleeves but agree that their binders just aren't... right. Looks like I'll be dumping funds into custom binders, too.
