Get E'm While You Can
I don't know what the future holds for big rookies, but if the trend continues the big rookies will be out of reach for many of us in most grades. Very happy I payed $14K for mine in 2014.

Point taken. Many baseball cards i been wanting have gone way too high, with so much supply, that its not worth chasing.
While i was sitting idle for months end, I took a swing into the same card above mentioned. But as a Bobby Orr USA TEST card.

I have always wanted one but always thought they were expensive and unattainable for the most part but it looks like I should have bit the bullet years ago and purchased one. Many are now popping up and receiving great prices so my chances of ever owning one now are pretty slim, unfortunately.

I just pass and get other Orr cards i like. This is one of my least favorites design wise, even though its the granddaddy of them all.

I know some have said I could if I sold my Mantle card but that is not going to happen anytime soon.

So glad I recently picked up the Orr rookie. No question it is on the rise and probably 10 years from now I will certainly be glad I bought when I did.

If you can get $100,000 USD for your PSA 8 one day, then you should do it and put that money into other bluechip cards. If you make the right moves, then you can double or even triple your money. The best part about doing this is that you get to enjoy playing with so many different cards.

Pure madness!!!!!
On Jan 18th, an O-Pee-Chee Gretzky RC in PSA 8 sold for $25,000 USD. Yesterday, another one went for $27,500 USD. And today, a big Canadian dealer, who had his PSA 8 sitting up on eBay for $30,000 USD, ended up taking it down! Wow!

Look at the Borque and Messier rookies on PWCC's auction. Don't ever remember them being even close to where they are now. The Lemieux is over $60K. What a great time to be a seller.

I remember how excited dealers were at the 1987 National in Atlantic City. There was buzzing around the room that Gretzky rookies were going for $50 and Lemieux rookies were going for $7. Everyone was ecstatic and couldn't get their product out fast enough to sell. They were thrilled at the prices they were getting,. Fast forward to today. |

A PSA 2 Mickey Mantle rookie just sold on ebay for 35k. That card cost $500 in 1987. Jordan and Gretzky are the next Mickey Mantle. 10-20 years from now those Jordan's and Gretzky's that people sold for great profits today will only be paying much higher to get those cards back if they want them. The best thing to do if you're selling your PSA 8's or PSA 9's today, is to take a little bit of that money and buy a PSA 5 with the profits. Mickey Mantle 1952 topps has 74 PSA 7's. 35 PSA 8's and 6 PSA 9's. Gretzky 1979 opc has 1093 PSA 7's. 742 PSA 8's and 89 PSA 9's. If you believe that there are 15-20 Gretzky collectors for every 1 Mantle collector, then you feel that Gretzky cards will rise like Mantle. If you feel that the 15-20 to 1 ratio is not even close, then you may feel the Gretzky craze we are in is overdone. Last edited by goldenage; 01-31-2021 at 07:10 AM. |

I picked up this beauty in the last Classic Auction. It’s labeled OC for top to bottom (I measured it as 75/25 or slightly worse). I was happy with it. I guess if it was really ex-mt because of the centering, I paid very full but the centering didn’t bother me so...it’s mine.

Centering on that card is not near as obvious as it is on some others so I would be perfectly happy with that copy as well.

I have never been happier that I grew up in NYC loathing all things Boston (as a kid I thought the full name of the town was "Bostonsucks"), and have never had any desire to own an Orr RC.
