Hal was an exceptionally popular player for the Seals, and sold out to capacity crowds, for example, at Hal Rhyne Day at Recreation Park.

Delighted to share this one here
Hal Rhyne was a Seals favorite. He played with them before and immediately after the Pirates, then to the American League for five years.

Your card is of the first year (1934) of his return to San Francisco, where he continued to play for the Seals through the first part of 1938.

The "Horne" book does not list the "offer expires" date for Rhyne of April 1st 1935 shown in your picture. I have the same picture without coupon (Rhyne facing front while batting) that is slightly more cropped. I have to figure out where to place it. The "Horne" book list one with "Offer expires April 1st, 1936" but says "side view- foot high," and for "Oct. 1st, 1936 as "side view - foot low." No scan of the "April 1st, 1936," but we have a scan of the "Offer expires Oct. 1st 1936" card.

That's not the end of Rhyne as Krause says Rhyne has a 1937-38 card. It is possible he actual has two more cards from that latter timeframe: one with a coupon with an "Offer expires Oct. 30th 1937" and another without a coupon (a 1938). Those two should be with a square name box (not one with cutoff corners of 1934-36).

Hey, we're getting a long way to identifying these cards.

Anyone with a card with a coupon (or a 1938 card) not listed above in Post #39, add it to our project and we may be able to get this thing done so you can ultimately see a picture guide to all of the different variations.

Thanks,

Mike

We do appreciate you posting any scans you are able. I didn't respond sooner anticipating that you might be able to have already posted the cards you mentioned. We sure appreciate any help you can provide.

As an update for all, Mark Macrae has confirmed the existence of some of the cards on Horne's list. We still need pictures of any 1937-38 cards from the Hollywood Stars (with or without coupons). It will help resolve the question of whether any still exist.

Also, if you can post even one card missing from Post #39 above, it will help. We have scans of over 200 different cards from 1933-1938, including many of the 1933 Sepias. Now that we are getting closer to the end, the last ones will permit us to have an actual picture identity of the entire group. Don't wait. Please post!

Thanks,

Mike

Default Mike - I admire your passion

Here's another one to add to your list.

While he never made it to the proverbial Big Show, Norbert was a legend of sorts in PCL. A rather obvious HOF'er in the PCL Hall of Fame, Ted amassed nearly 2,500 hits during his career, and was an all around offensive powerhouse. Consistently a .300+ hitter, he also had power behind his swing. Nonetheless, one of his major claims to fame during his storied career is that he was traded (along with some cash and a few others) for Joe DiMaggio. Joe D!

In addition to all of the above, from a personal collecting standpoint, this is one of the nicest tabbed Zee's that I've got in my collection, and I feel so fortunate to be sharing with y'all and adding to this data archive

Your 1935 Ted Norbert card is one of the finest Zeenut cards I've seen with a coupon. I guess we are all fortunate he was traded for Joe D. DiMaggio Zeenuts abound. 1935 Norbert cards are virtually unknown with a coupon. Sorry, the scan below of your card got distorted when I made the card the same size of the others. Even so, since we have a scan of Norbert's 1936 card, we can see the difference between the two years. Your 1935 card has a larger, more cropped pose of Norbert (with his foot almost touching the bottom of the picture), while the 1936 version shows lots of space between his foot and the bottom of the picture.

We'll clean up the picture. Again, thanks,

Mike

Thanks to philliesphan providing an updated scan, here's a better comparison of Ted Norbert's cards from 1935 (offer expires April 1st, 1936) and 1936 (offer expires Oct. 1st 1936). His 1935 card has a larger, more cropped pose (with Norbert's foot almost touching the bottom of the picture), while the 1936 version shows lots more space between his foot and the bottom of the picture. The condition of this 1935 card is what we all hope for but rarely find.

Thanks again,

Mike

P.S. Hey, Everybody! From the pictures posted, you can see the difference between these two cards issued in different years. POST MORE ZEENUT CARDS WITH COUPONS. Maybe we'll get this project done where all of the differences in varieties of Zeenut cards from the 1933 to 1938 cards can be readily identified to their year of issue.
