My guess is due to where they were stored. Was it in a climate controlled area? Even so the temperature setting could have been an issue.

Since it is the gloss seeping onto the cardboard my guess is that the temperature has something to do with it.

Those cards in my previous picture look like the same as they probably did in 1985.

I am not certain as they were in this condition when I got them. It is not easily seen at first glance but against the "NM/MT" base set in the binder you can see the difference. It is definitely not bad enough for me worry about replacing the set.

I have seen Topps with glosscoat that yellows back into the late 70's. Some are cards I got in packs at the time that have been stored with cards also bought in packs that didn't yellow. (As well as varying degrees of gloss, which I should study at some point, but studying something that's mostly clear isn't easy)

Not a chemist but the yellowing may be due to chemical reactions over time between the cards and the plastic types of graded holders, sleeves and top loaders, not to mention pages...cards in the box may stay white because there is nothing to react to...
