Davey Johnson is correct.
On June 11, 1985, while managing the Mets, the Phillies beat them 26-7. Philadelphia scored 9 runs in the 1st and 7 in the 2nd to lead 16-0 after two innings. Eleven years later, on April 19, 1996, while managing the Orioles, Baltimore trailed the Texas Rangers 10-7 after having failed to score in the top of the 8th. In the bottom of the eighth, Texas scored 16 times to win 26-7. Probably the only two 26-7 games ever played, and Johnson managed and lost them both! What are the odds? There has been at least one other one, the Cubs beat the Rockies 26-7 in Colorado on August 18, 1995. It came to my mind as soon as I saw 26-7 mentioned.

Then there were three. I remember a Giants game in 1944 that they won 26-8, but not the Rockies game. 26 runs or more has probably been done fewer than a dozen times. Again, just a guess.

I just went to Retrosheet and saw the box score for the Cubs 26-7 win in 1995. Good catch.

I knew one of the teams had to be the Mets but went with Casey instead of Davey.

When the Red Sox had a 17 run inning in 1953, the major league record, they left the bases loaded, so 23 men came to the plate. Five batted three times, and at least one had three hits that inning.

Did you stay for the whole game?

Born in 1952, just a tad young for that one.

I was at that Phillies/Mets game .......... Von Hayes hit 2 HRs in first (including a grand slam). I was with my friend, who was a live and die Mets fan. In about the 5th inning he wanted to leave, he was so disgusted. I said no way. First, it was going to be some sort of record setting run total, that I wanted to see. Secondly, I was on a beer per inning streak ....... Fun memory, Scott |

One of the things that attracts me to the game of baseball is the numbers, especially those that are so bizarre that they may have happened only once or twice in the game's entire history. Fernando Tatis hitting two grand slams in the same inning is one of those perfect achievements that happened once but perhaps never will again.
And some of them are obscure. I remember a game many years ago where Bert Campaneris (I think?) went 0 for 4 but still managed to score 4 runs. And I thought how incredibly difficult is it to score four times on an 0 for 4 night? Maybe it happens once every 25 or 50 years. So when I discovered that Johnson managed two unique 26-7 games, well that falls right into my wheelhouse. |
