1933 Goudey Minor Stars
I'm thinking about getting my feet wet with some '33 Goudeys. I'm not super familiar with the set (or even that era) and I was wondering what are some of the minor stars from the set. I'm aware of the spy Moe Berg.
Are there players from the set who may still have a chance of being inducted into Cooperstown? |

Riggs
- Riggs Stephenson (.336 career BA)
- Benny Bengough for obvious reasons (Card #1) - Babe Herman (.324 career BA) - Muddy Ruel (battery mate of Walter Johnson) - Bob O'Farrell (NL MVP in 192?) and considered one of the best defensive catchers of the time - are just a few that come to mind but as far as making Hall of Fame......that will be tough as if they have not made it by now...... It is a beautiful and historic set and you can have fun with the minor stars and they will be cheap except maybe Card #1 in better condition of course! Good luck! Wes Ferrell seems to keep getting consideration for the Hall.

Wes....
I've always admired him and yes he is definitely a minor star to star but I think that his ERA of over 4 will do him in. I love the fact that he hit the most HRs of any pitcher (minus Babe of course) but he did so while he was still pitching games so that is cool. The fact that he has a "no hitter" is cool.
Fairly short 14 year career (unless you compare him to average Joe MLB average of 5.6 years) also hurts him I think. Not sure he will ever get in. Just my 2 cents. Peace, Mike Last edited by vthobby; 03-29-2016 at 01:26 PM. |

Lefty O'Doul is in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame, though many seem to call him a HoFer on eBay. Guess they're not lying.

Adolfo Luque is in the Cuban Baseball HOF. Jack Quinn, although not quite HOF caliber, was a good pitcher for a very long time. I mean he even has a card in the T206 set.
I'm not sure about what type of careers they had, but the Paul Richards and Dibrell Williams cards are two of my favorite looking Prewar cards. |

More
Here are some other players, most not quite having the careers as those already mentioned, but still worthy of consideration (and looking up their bios and career stats on the internet):
6 Jimmy Dykes 28 Dick Bartell 39 Mark Koenig 51 Charlie Grimm 62 Pepper Martin 67 Guy Bush 81 Sam Jones 98 Wally Berger 130 Fred Fitzsimmons 153 Buddy Myer 155 Joe Judge 199 Tom Bridges 203 Lonnie Warneke 221 Dale Alexander 225 Bill Jurges 226 Charley Root There are probably the same amount of interesting players not mentioned yet. You should add Sam Byrd to your list as well. He is the only person to play in a World Series and at The Masters.

Wow I did not know this about Sam Byrd, really cool.
And thanks for the other lists guys. Love learning about a new set. T206 has been my main focus the last 4 years, so it's fun to get to know a new era. Quote:

Hadn't
I hadn't given 33 Goudeys much thought in quite some time but happened upon this minor (at best) star card during a recent auction and fell in love all over again...classic set!

Virgil "Spud" Davis was a pretty good catcher. Starting catcher for the Gas House Gang. Lifetime .308 hitter. I'm happy to have a newspaper photo of him, Vince Dimaggio, Frank Frisch, and Elbie Fletcher in street clothes at the 1939 Worlds Fair. Signed by Davis, Fletcher, and Dimaggio. Unfortunately not by "The Fordham Flash".
