Default 1970 - 1979 Topps Run COMPLETE

Pretty excited...got the last card to my 1972 Topps set tonight. This is the last card in my 70-79 Topps run. All done with the 70s!!

Here is my last 70s card (not the actual card or scan, I don't have it in hand yet and got it from a member here!)

I am down to needing 7 1967 Topps cards...once I have those I will have a complete 64-90 run...excited! Thanks for letting me share...

Way to go. Those goals were huge for me in my collecting as well and a big accomplishment for you.

Are you selecting those years for a reason?

Will you go for a 1963 set next or go for the 1980's?

I remember 20 years ago (Pre Internet days) finally finding that Carew In Action card at a card show.

It was always a tough card, being in the high number series.

I think I payed $3 for it, and it had rounded corners and a crease.

But it was the only one I found in several years of local card shows.

Congrats John!!! BTW - I loved your comment in the BST on the '72 set, I can't agree more - that was one tiring set to complete!!

Congratulations, John.

I have to admit that in more recent months as I've been perusing the "modern collecting" threads on this board, I have made a habit of checking your signature whenever you post just to see what your Topps set progress is at.

To all the folks out there putting together these large runs: thanks for sharing your progress. I think it's a hugely impressive feat, and would love to do it myself but instead live vicariously through your successes instead. It's much more affordable and takes up a lot less space

Cheers,

Richard.

Richard...thanks for checking in on my progress! This is a fun place and a great outlet to share with like minded folks. I have a ritual after each card...check it off my website, my travel checklists, and then come here and update signature.

Mintacular...thanks...it does feel good. Born in 1970 buying cards as a kid in packs, I would have freaked to know one day I would have a 70s Topps run. I guess I did this for him...haha. Funny about the 57s...I had that one completed here recently, and as mentioned several times here sold it to fund the adoption of my 5th kid (4 daughters, 1 son). It was in EX to NM condition, and I did quite well. I HATE selling though, more of a buyer, but certainly made the wife happy. Going to be strange to re-do that one, it will probably be last while I do the dreaded 52s...

brob28...yep...pain in the a**!

Al...yeah...haha...I am in the abyss now!

Nate...thanks, and thanks for the help!

darkhorse...I certainly admire where you are at, I am hoping to catch you soon. I really enjoy your progress reports. Once I complete 67 I will be more organized than I have ever been. Instead of going a year in a row, I just randomly went after whatever year I felt like at the time or even let a good deal on a lot decide my way. I decided to focus on getting some sort of run to get organized. I actually do have the 80's already...I am 6 cards from 67 short of my actual run of 64-90. I am either going to do 62, 63, or 56 next....and I have a start on each one. I do have a pretty good chunk of 59s going, but I am not happy with their overall condition (bad starters lot). Leaning on 56...

David W...heck, you may get more than $3 for that card now even in that shape. Still a tough card and I must have lost 5 or 6 auctions as they spiraled out of control. I actually picked up his base card for a pretty good deal at a show..the IA was much harder to nail down. I remember going for sets Pre-Internet...MUCH different for sure. I used to love annoying a dealer on the other side of the phone as I asked him to check for 60s commons in the 80s...haha.

Thanks DanP, Rickyy, and brewing! Much appreciated...

I LOVED doing the 1956 set. Plenty of challenges there with a couple of short prints, card stock variations and dated team sets to make it as tough as you want.

The only thing I did for that set was get the entire thing in grey back. I just liked the consistency there. Otherwise I avoided the dated team variations etc. If you pick them up in VG/EX or better they display really nicely.

1963 rather bored me. 1962 was my birth year but a challenge because even EX condition cards may not display well. Plus all the variations. Yikes!

Good luck in whatever you do and keep us posted.

Do you plan on upgrading or are you done with buying the 1970's cards?

Yes...upgrading is a constant thing, which makes it fun. I would say 95% of my run is EX or better. I have a living list of all cards needing upgrades, and an even more detailed list of cards that are high priority.
