Latest Pickups
I didn't see a thread for the latest pickups, so I thought I'd start a new one. I was excited to pick up this "new" N162 Sullivan to add to my Sullivan collection, so I thought I'd share some pictures.

Good idea!
In honor of the Dallas Cowboys [too soon? I can never tell], here are a couple of booze-related cards: 1951 Sugar Ray Robinson for vermouth PC 2012 Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko for beer: For the non-drinkers--like me--Joe Louis Milk Co. premiums: I don't know what the heck this is. Came from a set of at least 50, and appears to have been printed in 1928. About 10 x 10. I had to grab it since it was Benny Leonard: A semi-grail for me as it fills a giant chasm in my Benny Leonard collection. Only one I've seen but I assumed he had a PC for his restaurant since everyone else who boxed and ran a restaurant had one for theirs:

Is this on card stock? I've come across one of these before - and wasn't sure what I was looking at. Thanks, Jeff

Picked this up in auction this past week. One of a few I didn't have for my '51 Ringside set.

I picked up this poster related to the third Zale-Graziano fight. Thought it was really cool. A world away from an actual fight poster, but also a world away in price!

No kidding Arthur? Did you consign it to the auction I just won? Small world. There's a limited amount of boxing material, so sometimes we're bound to just sell it back and forth to each other I guess.

No, I sold it on ebay maybe 5-6 months ago. I really enjoyed it though, it's a great card.

This turned out to be a great piece - loaded with photos and commentary about the Johnson/Jeffries fight. There were two other issues that sold on ebay at the same time, but I lost out on them - one had a color supplement of Johnson, but it didn't look like him.

Jerry, that's a very cool card. I've just discovered Mutoscope cards in the last year or so and would love to pick up a set one day.
I just picked up a boxing program from the first Zale-Graziano fight. I missed the auction for the second fight (I am a Graziano fan and would have loved to have gotten it) because "Rocky" wasn't in the title and that's how I did my search. Arghhh. But I love the cover of this program and am excited about getting it. |

Not a new pickup per se, since I got it a few years ago, but had lost track of it until a few weeks ago, so I just had it graded and got back from PSA. Looks nicer than a 2, but minor creases and back staining make the grade correct.

Some Jim Jeffries material:
Ticket and raincheck from the Jeffries Barn boxing arena here in Burbank: An invitation and two tickets [front and back shown] to a 1941 dinner of the California Boxing Commission honoring Jeffries: Business card of the manager of Jeffries Barn, G.W. Aiton. Interestingly, Aiton was a former MLB player. He played in 10 games for the 1912 St. Louis Browns: Two newly discovered Jeffries mail reply cards. I'd previously cataloged a card used to respond to mail about his 75th birthday: Jeffries Barn letterhead signed by Aiton: And a vintage snapshot of Rocky Marciano at training camp: PS: I now have one of the Jeffries 75th birthday mail reply cards available for sale or trade. Only the 2nd one I've seen. Minor back damage from scrapbook removal

James Jeffries T218 Tolstoi
This beauty arrived today. Am glad to finally add him to my set after several missed opportunities over the years. I hope you can see in the picture that the back has a faint print outline (faded red/pink) that appears to mirror the front of image of the card. Notice that the left/right elbows are reversed. Is this likely a wet sheet transfer?

Boxing doesn't generally get a whole lot of my budget or attention, so it usually takes me a while to finish anything(even the small sets). Had the wrong "type" as a fill in for a while, but finally managed to pick up the matching type cheapie to finish this small set..

Wrestling poster from Yakima Armory event, 1950. Al Szacz v. Gorgeous Gussie the 400 lbs. bear. Slim wrestling/baseball crossover.
One of the apocryphal stories of minor league baseball in central Washington featured longtime fiery PCL player/manager, Edo Vanni, who wrestled a bear in between games of a double header. He played for Yakima Bears in 1949, but the story has had many settings including Yakima, Wenatchee and even Salem Oregon. By all reports the bear won. Event sponsored by Sick's Brewing & Malting of Sick's Stadium and Seattle Pilots infamy. Last edited by pariah1107; 07-12-2013 at 10:50 AM. |

Been high on my wrestling want-list for a while. It's been a pain finding one that wasn't vastly overpriced. Was very happy with the price from the opcbaseball site that advertised in the BST...
Also fits into my Baseball collection as well. I've always had a soft spot for one time ballplayers who went on to be more famous post-career.. Last edited by novakjr; 09-07-2013 at 05:28 PM. |

Nice Jack Johnson's.
Picked up this Nick Daviscourt signed 8X11. Daviscourt wrestled for the World Championship versus Ed "Strangler" Lewis (1921) & Jim Browning (1934), but lost both bouts. Daviscourt was a ruffian in the ring. According to The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels he exclaimed in The Ring magazine, "They want action. They cry for gore. Toss a man out of the ring; stand on his chest. Boot him as he is about to rise to his feet, stick your finger in his eye or clout him on the chin and you'll see how the customers will flock to see you the next time out." He fought under the names Nick Dewiscourt, Nick Daviscourt, Dick Daviscourt, & Nick De Court, but he was born Nicholas de Wiscourt in Ellensburg 1889. His many pseudonyms were out of necessity since he had been banned in many states for using "illegal tactics" including a closed fist/forearm blow to the chin known as the "Chawhammer". .... Goes well with 1909 Ellensburg High School Baseball team photo (Daviscourt top row far right). Thanks Johnny..... Last edited by pariah1107; 12-11-2013 at 09:48 AM. |

Can't wait any longer
I was going to wait for somebody else to post before I put this up, but I got the scanner up and running and can't wait any longer. Got this from a member here at net54. The deal was sealed as we were both enduring the first onslaught of the polar vortex.
Definitely the pinnacle of my modest collection. |
