Searching for Tommy Bridges

My t206 chase is slowing down so I need something new to fix the cravings. I decided something easy to attack would be a simple player set and I'm going to go for former Detroit pitcher Tommy Bridges. He's from my hometown in Gordonsville, Tn and my oldest baseball memory is having T-Ball practice at Tommy Bridges Memorial Park. I've done some searching and I've compiled the following list.

1936 Goudey Wide Pen *Purchased
1936 World Wide Gum

So a few questions-

1. Does anyone here know of any other Tommy Bridges cards, mainstream or premium? It strikes me that I couldn't come across a Bridges Exhibit card considering he was the Tiger's Ace for a majority of the 30's. If anyone knows of any other examples I would love the info.

2. Anyone know why he is absent from the 1940 Play Ball set when he was 17-7 and selected to the All-Star Game in 39'?

3. While his lifetime stats (194-138, 200 CG, 1600 Ks) aren't jaw-dropping, it seemed that from 1934-1940 he was a pretty dominate pitcher. As a possible Veterans Selection for the HOF would you consider him
A. Not going to happen.
B. Longshot, but possible.
C. 50/50, one of these days.

Steven,

A couple of thoughts for you to check out:

1. If Bridges has '33 and '34 Goudey cards, he may also have '33 and '34 WWG cards (basically the same, but printed in Canada. Card backs may be in French).

2. Though I do not know if all cards are available in all colours, I believe there are 6 batter-up colours. You may also be able to find green, purple and sepia/brown variations.

Bridges actually has three '37 Wheaties cards, Series 7, 9 and 14. He is on a '38 Exhibit 4 in 1 with Gehringer, Greenberg and Rudy York.

This is not a card, but you won't find another like it. It is a 30 x 40 inch original Detroit News photo from the 1930's.. I have since had it cleaned and reframed.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread for this so I'll ask it here. I remember a while ago there was a thread that showcased scans of how everyone displayed their collection. There was a guy that had a huge Dummy Taylor collection featured and several other photos of top notch collections within the thread. I tried searching back posts but couldn't find it. If anyone has the link just let me know.

Steven, 1st I have a correction, the photo is 40 x 60 inches. I have 5 others that are 30 x 40 inches. They are Cobb, Heilman, Cochrane, Crawford, Schoolboy Rowe as well as the Bridges I posted..

This is the story:

J.P. McCarthy was a popular radio personality in the Detroit area at the time. This was in the early 1980's. He has since passed away. Anyway I was listening to his radio show and he was advertising a sports auction at a Knights of Columbus hall in Bay City, Michigan. My son and I drove up there for the auction and met Walt Graveline, a 92 year old man who owned the pictures.

The photos had been hung in his clothing store for several years. Actually no one else showed up for the auction and I offered 1 price for the 6 photos and he accepted. He also had some T206 cards that were not for sale and showed them to me at his home. He told me the photos were produced in the 1930's using those large cameras of those days.

He had taped his name and address over the original labels that were on the photos. This damaged the labels. I printed new labels to look just like the originals on gold paper. They read:

Photo
Mural by Multi-color.

That is the story.

With my tongue planted firmly in my cheek, I have a couple of questions.

1. What is that "thing" just off the third base line? (I'm going to assume it's a reflection, but feel free to make up a better story.)

2. Where do you hang 6 pictures that size?

Hi Jim, yes that is a reflection from when I took that picture, looks like a table leg or something. The frames you see were my handmade pieces, I have since had them professionally framed.

They hang in a finished basement. Yes married to an understanding wife. Although, I will say she was not that happy when I brought these home.

Hi Steve,

Here's a scan of a Tommy Bridges 1938 Exhibit #7. It definitely was the same photo used for his 1941 Play Ball #65. I'm attaching a scan of mine for comparison.
