T205: How to spot a reprint

Hey guys,

I recently acquired some T205 cards off Sportsbuy and I suspect that they may be reprints. I am a little out of my element because pre 1933 Goudey I only collect T206 on a consistent basis, however if I see a card here and there I like I won't hesitate to go for it.

Two questions for the experts:

1) - Are these cards legit?

2) - How heavily was the T205 series reprinted and what are the tell-tale signs of a T205 reprint?

They all look good to me...

The T205 set was reprinted in a box form about 20 years ago. The reprints are more glossy and the backs are slick. There are some other earlier reprints floating around as well. The Dover reprints are easy to spot because both sides are glossy and the colors are a little off. Cobb was reprinted as well which is easy to spot as well. The reprinted Cobbs have a black Piedmont back and are all fake. There are a few other fake T205s around with color issues on the backs (red piedmont, blue sweet cap, etc.).

The T205 borders are covered in a dusting of genuine metal. The metal has tarnished and dulled with age like an old penny, but can be felt with the fingers and should reflect light differently than the rest of the card. The borders were originally bright like a new penny.

I agree with all of those appearing authentic.


Spend about $10 to $15 (which would include shipping) and buy a small black light. If you illuminate a reprint T205 with UV light, it will fluoresce, an authentic T205 won't. Most paper manufactured after the late 1940s had brighteners added to make the paper look better. Old paper doesn't have that. It's an easy way to sort them until you get a feel for doing it with the hand and eye.

HIGHLY recommended.
