Thoughts on "W" Series Sets

I'm looking at starting a "W" Series (Strip card) set. Here are some criteria for the sets:
1) Prefer one without Babe Ruth (for budget reasons).
2) Like the set to have the team name listed, not just the players name.
3) Prefer the cards to have photos versus drawings.
4) Doesn't matter if the set is numbered or unnumbered.
5) Would like to buy commons in VG condition to be around $10-$15.
6) Would like the entire set to be baseball players only.

Right now I'm looking towards these sets, in no particular order:

1) W514 - Most likely not since it has Joe Jackson (valued more than a Babe Ruth), and other "Black Sox" players.

2) W574 - Would like more teams (has most American League teams but no National League teams).

3) W590 - Has Lou Gehrig, so may not try this one either.


What are you're thoughts on these, or other "W" Series (Strip Cards) sets? Did some searching on "the 'net" and could not find any reprint sets, however I could be wrong. So has any "W" Series sets been reprinted?

How difficult are the cards to find. Currently there are very few on eBay compared to the "T" Series sets, however the "T" Series cards are a lot more popular than the "W" Series cards.

For the W514 set, with it being a non-photo set, I really like the design of the set. How much could I expect to pay for graded (from SGC, PSA or Beckett) Joe Jackson in Poor or Authentic condition?

I am a huge fan of these sets. The only one I collect is the 1921 w551 issue. I have been buying/collecting/selling them since 1989 and I have seen so many variations of them. I got into them after I bought a uncut set from Alan ( Mint ) at a National in the late 80s. I have built up quite the collection of them. I really like the uncut sheets of them and panels. The one thing that is really wild is the prices that people try to sell them for. I have seen the Ruth's sell from anywhere from $100.00 to $2,800 depending on the grade. The uncut strips really range as well... The right amount for an uncut strip is I think around $1,000 give or take some... But you will see outrageous prices for them depending on the person and what they think they can get. Sorry for rambling on, I just really like this issue.

W517 is a nice set, there is 2 Ruths but they arent too much $$.
Cool set because over 1/2 the players in the set are Hall of Famers.

In addition to Gehrig, W590 also has Ruth, Cobb, Walter Johnson and Grover Alexander. Additionally, there is a scarce second printing. This is a very difficult set to complete if you're after all the variations.

There are many sets and usually the Cobb's and Ruth's will not be too bad in the strip card sets. The one I would recommend is the following...

W572- They have both photos and most have the team named in front. If you aren't too picky about having full side borders or anything you can pick up commons for $5-15 and HOFers for way less than most sets...

Peter -- Thanks for helping with the reprints. For some reason that name slipped my mind. I was thinking it was Kit Young. After visiting Larry's site, looks like only one "W" Series set has been reprinted, and it's not one I'm looking at collecting.

Josh -- Thanks for the insight into the W551 set. Do you recall what the Ruth looked like that sold for about $100? Was it a complete card, or was pieces missing?

fkw -- Was considering the W517, however was wondering if each card could be found with all the different colors, similar to the 1934-36 Batter-Up set.

Andy -- Looks like I'll be crossing off the W590 set. Was not aware of the second series, and I would like all variations of the cards.

Rhett -- According to oldcardboard.com, the W572 set has 121 cards and is a Multi-Sport set. Do you know if there is 121 baseball players? If not, how many of the 121 cards are baseball players.

While the W572's may have been distributed at the same time as cards from other sets, they came in strips of 10 and have never seen anyone on the strips except baseball players (of which there are 121 different known).

Here is a strip that I used to own that has 10 different players on it...



I have never tried to put the set together but it would probably be a fairly fun one to do...
