Howdy! I posted a few days ago (Best way of authenticating cards)wondering where I could get a few cards that I purchased authenticated. Well...They're here, and here are some images of the front and the back of the cards for you to look at. See anything that screams counterfeit, or do you think I should take the chance on having them graded? I laid the cards directly on the scanner to try and get the best images. If you need anymore pics, they can be provided. Thanks!! - Dustin |

Unfortunately the T205s and T206s are fakes, I am 100% of that. The '38 Goudey DiMaggio is a fake also. I suspect the rest are too but don't know enough about the General Baking cards to hazard more than a guess. Sorry... |

On the Wagner Playball, you can see the spot at the bottom of the reverse where the word "reprint" was erased. |

Like I said in the other post, I spent around $60 for all of them. The guy said in the auction they were reprints, but when I spoke with him he said he wasn't sure (and gave me one of the old stories as to how they were obtained), and put that to be safe. I just took the gamble. I'll probably keep them for comparison purposes, or just re-sell them as reprints. I'm too new in the vintage area to really know. - Dustin |

On the T206s (they are the easiest to spot) the front captions are wrong, the borders are wrong, the colors are wrong, the backs are the wrong color... |

Lol! I'm not trashing the guy... He sold them as reprints. Its just once I heard "the story" after I asked him about the cards origins (if it was truly a lie, then there's a thing called Karma) I thought I would take the gamble. I even told him that if he thought they may be authentic that he had thousands of dollars worth of cards on his hands and should think about pulling the auctions until having them authenticated. You live and learn. I said in the earlier post that worst case scenario I have some for comparison purposes. I just want to know what you see in each card that says its a counterfeit? - Dustin |

No need to explain. We all take risks from time to time. I recall that fairly recently I took a chance on a couple of Cobbs where the seller stated she just didn't know. Scans looked good so I popped for $800 with a clear understanding from the seller that if I detemined them to be reprints or fakes that she would refund my money. Once in hand I could tell they were not real and she promptly refunded my money in full. |

You can obviously see where someone took sandpaper to the front and back of the cards. Normal wear would not produce a card with (sandpaper) lines going vertically and horizontally on the same card. |

Dustin, you are sitting on a gold mine!!! As others have stated, the cards are fake as can be..... but all you have to do is sell each one individually on evil-bay, state that they are reprints but be vague with your description. State that you found the cards in the vest pocket of your dearly departed great grandfather... Oh, and don't forget the fuzzy scan. Make sure the scanner is sitting on a fast-moving car as you take the pictures. A few type-o's in your description will help. One last thing, and this is the most important of all. Before you put them back on evil-bay, try to get your hands on a beat-up T206 Honus Wagner reprint. You see, if you don't include a T206 Wagner in your auctions, you lose alot of validity in the scammer world and the rest of the cards you are selling will seem like fakes (I know, I know, they are fakes but that is not the point). Okay, unless others have any more suggestions that is it....before you know it, you will probably make a $1,000 profit. |

To add to Iggy's advice - make sure you impart to your potential customers that even though the cards are fake, there is the possibility that they could resell them as being authentic to an unsuspecting buyer. Say things like "old looking" and "doesn't say reprint" to help make the point. |

whoever posted that you should have a known authentic example in hand is spot on. Also, I think it is sometimes a good idea to buy a set of reprints, especially if it's of a set that you would really like to collect and the price isn't too bad. Larry Fritsch (RIP)cards sells several. This won't protect you against counterfeits or all reprints, but it's a good investment, IMO. |
