I think it was Mike Kahoe but am not betting the house. I liked this scouting report: "He knows where he's throwing because if he didn't there would be dead bodies strewn all over Idaho."

If he was still around he'd be 120 and probably relying on mainly off-speed stuff. I've always loved the Johnson T3. Awesome card.

Walter Johnson constantly feared that his powerful sidearm delivery would someday seriously hurt a batter. This feeling of his
was clearly demonstrated one Summer day in 1920 while pitching in Cleveland. The fog had rolled in off Lake Erie and the batter
asked the umpire to call the game. The umpire disregarded the batter's request. Walter Johnson approached the umpire and told
him to stop the game. The umpire heeded Johnson's request.

The batter was Ray Chapman....this event occurred just 2 weeks prior to the day Ray Chapman was fatally injured by an errant pitch.

A few interesting tidbits.
Ty Cobb is supposed to have said that his greatest embarrassment was batting against Walter Johnson on a dark day in Washington.
110 shutouts (most ever)
38 wins by 1-0 (most ever)
65 of his losses were by shutouts, 26 of them 1-0, both records.

David,
I always thought it was Cliff Blankenship.
But, both he and Kahoe were backup catchers for Wash. at that time, so either one could probably fit the situation.
