1939 Playball Ted Williams

A couple or three months ago there was a Williams rookie on eBay that I'm kind of kicking myself over for not bidding. The card looked to be in something around EX condition with the major flaw being some paper loss in the upper lefthand corner. The paper loss on the photograph portion of the card was colored in with black pen so it wasn't all that noticeable and the white border was left as is. The rest of the card looked very nice, indeed.

I believe the card sold for $234. Did someone get a terrific bargain? Should I continue kicking myself for passing on what might have been my best chance to pick up my hero's rookie card in fairly nice shape at a reasonable price?

I'll assume that although there was paper loss the card wasn't marked. If that's the case, the bidder got a good deal, but the card sold for just below market. But you did not miss out on a great deal.

I got a good deal for a '48 Bowman Y. Berra rookie card for $150. This card was centered and pretty, however, there was a pinhole on the top border. Similar type situation like you were describing. I also consider this card right below market price.

It was marked in the area where the owner tried to match up the area of the photograph with paper loss to the original black background color. It looked pretty good and he wasn't trying to hide the fact that the small area was colored in.

It doesn't matter how good a card looks, a marked card is substantially downgraded. It looks like the bidder paid market price.

I know where you're coming from, Peter. I just have this gnawing feeling that I may have missed out on my best opportunity to own a good looking example of the card. Thanks for your input.

Hi Fellas, I just recently picked up a beautiful example of the "kids" Rookie card. This card is fairly well centered also which is hard to find. One of my favorites!

"It doesn't matter how good a card looks, a marked card is substantially downgraded." what peter said is very true but what he said about his berra card is that the grade may be low but if the defect in your eyes is minor,like his berra w/pinhole, then you might of missed your chance at a low grade/priced card with an imperfection that doesn't bother you a lot. i'd take a pinhole over writing/recoloring. imo
