This is Mark Rucker writing. I am visiting Barry Sloate and he thought my question to him might find some answers on this site. |

you'd have no problems, given the quality was as you describe. I'd say you might even hit the 200-250 mark and still sell out. Just my opinion........ |

I would most likely purchase it as baseball photographs are a major focus of my collection. I am also a baseball book collector and I would love to own a 1/100 book like that...so count me in as interested. |

As a little background for those who do not know Mark, prior to the sale of his collction by Bill Mastro in 1995, Mark had the largest and most important pre-1876 baseball collection ever assembled. It was conducted as a single owner sale and created quite a stir at the time. Mark and I have been best of friends for more than twenty years, and when he approached me with this idea, I suggested he pose it to the board. Next to vintage cards, baseball photography comprises much of the discussion here. We both thank you for your feedback. |

I think 100 copies is a very low number. You could probably sell more than that to members of this board alone and a bunch more just by putting it on a rudimentary website or in an ebay store. |

Mark, maybe you can contact Paul Muchinsky who put out a coffee table sized book about baseball pinbacks. I believe he self published the book. Not sure how many copies there are of that book, but it was impossible to find on the secondary market so I had to go straight to him to buy one. |

As one working with a publisher now about a book I think your idea is a great one and more writers ought to consider it as a means to raising money for their books. |

Just to clarify - the book would be a single printing limited edition. No more copies after the initial run. The idea is to create an instant rarity of great beauty and historical importance. |

Before someone like me could drop $250 for a book I would want to see it. If it is anything like what I have pictured in my head then yes, I would get one. I agree that you could probably sell 100 or so just from members of this board. |

Well then I hope when the book is ready for distribution Mark will come back to this thread and give all those who said "aye" a chance to buy the book. 100 is extremely low for this type of book. |

I would most defintely like to get one then. Since you suggested its a 1x publsihing of just 100 books - I'd love to get one. And yes I hope you consider those who said they'd buy (here) a good chance to get one? |

Hi all- Mark is in Manhattan now at a meeting but sometime this evening he will get back on the board and address some questions. This is still a long term project- I can tell you that Mark has an archive of virtually every important baseball photograph known, so he will have no problem making this an encyclopedic effort. But as far as taking pre-issue deposits, I'll let him tackle that one. Regards, Barry |

Because it's a wonderful concept. And for $250, I'd assume it would be elegantly executed. But what are we trying to do here: create a limited-edition collectible or create a scholarly work for an audience of 100? It's not very educational if only 100 people "learn" from it, no? AND, when it sells out and a decision is made to re-print, you alienate the lucky 100... |

Bill- you are going to find this funny, but Mark told me there is a coffee table book out on stereoviews that has a stereoviewer built right into the book! Same as Kramer's book having legs that fold out into a coffee table. True story! |

Thanks Joe, got it and responded. Mark is gone now and will be back home in Boulder tomorrow. Either he or I will keep the board apprised of the project as it progresses, but it is his project entirely. |
