Hi i saw this auction on ebay. Not sure if i entered the link okay or not.
It's item number 8831690290.

I never saw or heard of fake versions of this card out there. Maybe there is and i'm not aware of it. The description of the size dimensions don't match correctly with Lemke's book. It's also blank backed and there should be a schedule. I assume it must be a fake, with seller's description and history of not selling cards, as it appears.

Just wanted to hear what everyone else thought about it

And besides any real problems (as to auth.) with the card, if you decide to return it (and they agree to accept the return) - they'll keep 15% to put the card back in their binder.

100 percent fake, besides the look of it and the fact that it is missing the schedule on the back, the seller is notorious for selling fake goods.

Its missing the back, and also is too big compared to the size listed in the SCD catalog.

Yeah, i asked them yesturday where it came from, and how they aquired it. they havn't answered. I also see that they've sold a lot of old 60's mantle's that have no backs

I did not know they made reprints of this set? Then again, I do not follow reprint sets. Maybe it's a rare one-of-a-kind blank back!! A PROOF? ... NOT

On a related question, have many cards were in the authentic Baltimore News set ? Were there any legitimate reprints of the Guy Zinn card from this same set ?

I think it might be real. The REA example that recently sold was red. The real thing does come in blue. Where did the original come from? Has there been a blue border copy sold recently? At auction or otherwise? You have to be pretty damned sophisticated to fake an item such as this. I don't think the seller is.

But then this is just MHO.

Scans of the blue tinted Baltimore News Ruth can be found over the internet, a PSA 4 was also recently sold in an REA auction. I imagine the seller made this whole thing himself from just an image over the internet. He has produced reprint posters of a unique Jackie Robinson Bond Bread poster from just a 2 by 2 inch picture in a book. I wouldn't put much past him.

if he was going to all that trouble why wouldn't he just open up the SCD and get the size right. Why wouldn't he reproduce the schedule back? Looking at the right edge it appears to have been hand cut from something. Maybe a display item?

The poster purchased from him was a little more than an inch taller than the original. So no, i'm not sure why he didn't make either the right size but he didn't. Look at the other items he is selling. A Honus Wagner trade card advertising a whiskey that is also a reprint. Once questioned about the how he aquired this Jackie Robinson poster he claimed it was his dads from the 60s and he had recently got it from him yet it is clear that the poster was produced within the last year. It is weird that my Robinson poster AND his Baltimore News Ruth both have the same type of spots on the back. That's all I am saying about this seller, I would advise not bidding on this card.

By the way, the dealers candy wrapper looks a little off to my eyes too. Something about the way the paper chips on the back look layered.

That said, it must take a lot of effort to produce a one off counterfeit for an issue that's so rare.

Notice the print and photo detail on this one (below) is far clearer and more crisp.

Like the others have said this guy has a lot of fake stuff up right now on ebay along with the Balt News Ruth fake.

Bottom line the card in the auction is described as much larger than it should be. SCD says 2-5/8" by 3-5/8"........ the one in auction says 3" by 4-1/4". NOT EVEN CLOSE!! That alone says fake.



Edited to add: NOTICE the crease on this one above (lower right corner) has some white showing almost all the way along the crease........ Yet the example on eBay does not have this charactoristic on any of its many creases.

Tell the seller that the last two PSA graded Baltimore News
Babe Ruths sold for over $100,000 each in Robert Edward Auctions.
If he doesn't pull the auction, it's a fake. Even Mother Theresa
would have ended early an eBay auction with bids if she found out the
card would sell for $100,000 elsewhere. If the current seller knows it's
a fake, he'll be content with the current $200+ bidding.

I emailed the seller yesterday that this card would sell for over $75,000 if he put it in a major auction house auction and he won't get a fraction of that on ebay....and yet the auction still runs.

Having duplicated enough text & image at work, that is definitely a fake. The way the shadow and some of the grayer areas in original are more dense in the fake, not to metion the slightly fuzzier text, are signs of duplication. Avoid like the plague...

The seller is printing the Mantles also. Go and check his completed auctions and feedback, there must be at least a half dozen of the same Mantle cards he has already sold. On Monday, I am going to report him to the Indiana Attorney Generals office. If anyone has been scammed, (I haven't been) I would suggest doing the same thing.
