how rare is the RED HINDU?!?!?!?

In over 25 years of collecting I've probably seen 15-20 or so red hindu t-206's for sale. I have 3 of them. They seem pretty rare...but how rare? Rarer than some e-cards? Rarer than tip-top pirates? How rare dammit!

My opinion as far as T206's probably as tough as Brown Lenox and much tougher than Uzit's.

One e90-1 maybe tougher , the Duffy card.
E105 Cobb and Wags throwing
along with of course most of yous favorites the e107- I had a Flick and a Lajoie over 10 yrs ago , the Flick was vgx and the Lajoie good, wish I still had em.
Sold them for 850 on the pair...ugh !

Had a Gandil Red Hindu- Forman ( Dave ) got it from me 2 Cleveland shows ago.

I like them and will trade you for all 3 of them , isn't that nice of me ? Thanks

I think I see more of them than the brown lenox.
The t206 museum online has them listed as the ninth rarest back behind brown Lenox (6), Drum (7), and Uzit (8). Don't know where they get their info. but I do see a BIT more red hindus than uzits and drums.

It could also be that I see the same examples appearing over and over for auction. I used to own a Griffith Batting and I've seen another Griffith Batting that wasn't the one I owned. Evers seems to pop out in my mind as well...maybe a dream I had.

At any rate, I sure do like em'.

such as a Dockman or such. I personally (years back, when I collected T206 rare backs), had over a dozen. I also had, at one time, THREE Gandil Red Hindus!!! Most seem to be buried now and exchanged only in private deals (not on eBay that much) - that is why you don't see them as often as you would have 3-4 years ago.

In my experience with T206 back (I have every brand variety except Lenox brown), the red Hindus are just below Drum and Uzit. I think they are tougher than Broadleaf or Carolina Brights. Worrying about factory nos., etc is a bit too obsessive for me. More power to those that do. I am told there are people out there attempting to build T206 master sets with every back variation down to factory numbers, etc. I am content to have a handful, or even one example, of each of the brand backs (including color variations of Hindu and Lenox, and blank back) as representatives within my set. I am about halfway to a complet set, but have all the back varieties except brown Lenox. Anybody have one for me?

You know I have passed on brown Lenox examples in recent auctions because I am not thoroughly convinced they are real. I suppose I am waiting to see one in person first. Are there those of you with examples of brown Lenox backed T206s who can vouch for their clear difference from black Lenoxs?

The brown Lenox and Brown Old Mill are legitimate back variations. I have owned both, and until I inspected them in person, was also sceptical.

thanks for all of the input folks. My 3 are a chase throwing black hat, a mordecai brown follow through and a crandall. Thay all have gorgeous vivid colors. Unfortunately, the brown and chase have 3-c written on crayon on the back.

rarer than Carolina Brights, Broadleaf 350, and black Lenox. I dont think they are rarer than Drum, Uzit, Broadleaf 460, and Brown Lenox. Just my observation after working on a back collection over the years. I own a Snodgrass catching:

I own a nice Johnny Evers, and the Gandil which Scott
formerly owned (the best condition example of the 4
I have seen).

When Bill Heitman wrote his T206 book in the 80s they
could only get a count on 6 known Red Hindu examples.

Today, there are actually not that many different known players
(about 28 different known subjects). Usually you see the
same card over and over at auction, ie: Griffith batting,
there are also a lot of known examples of Zack Wheat.

In comparison there are twice as many known player poses
with Drum back, almost twice as many known players on Uzit back.
The player selection of subjects known to exist is greater
on the supposedly tougher backs than on the 'easier' Red Hindu!

Marc,
Bill Heitman's "The Monster" should list the players that 'could' carry the drum and uzit backs. I don't think Red Hindu was included in the study.
